DAV Department of Minnesota

DAV Department of Minnesota Keeping Our Promise to America's Veterans Fulfilling our promises to the men and women who served.

We are dedicated to a single purpose: empowering veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. We accomplish this by ensuring that veterans and their families can access the full range of benefits available to them; fighting for the interests of America’s injured heroes on Capitol Hill; and educating the public about the great sacrifices and needs of veterans transitioning back to

civilian life. Providing free, professional assistance to veterans and their families in obtaining benefits and services earned through military service and provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and other agencies of government. Providing outreach concerning its program services to the American people generally, and to disabled veterans and their families specifically. Representing the interests of disabled veterans, their families, their widowed spouses and their orphans before Congress, the White House and the Judicial Branch, as well as state and local government. Extending DAV’s mission of hope into the communities where these veterans and their families live through a network of state-level Departments and local chapters. Providing a structure through which disabled veterans can express their compassion for their fellow veterans through a variety of volunteer programs.

Honoring Women Veterans! 🎉

Members of the DAV of Minnesota Women Veterans Committee are handing out cookies today at the Minneapolis VA and CBOCs across Minnesota in celebration of Women Veterans Recognition Day.

Today, June 12, marks the 1948 signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, which allowed women to serve permanently in the U.S. military. Thank you to all the trailblazing women who have served our country!

Today marks the 78th anniversary of the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act into law by President Truman. It enabled women to serve as permanent, regular members of the military. Although Congress had given the Women’s Army Corps full Army status during wartime in 1943, the WAC law was set to expire on June 30, 1948.

DAV strives to ensure women veterans receive the healthcare they’ve earned through their service, including gender specific care that is unique to women veterans. Learn more at womenveterans.org.

Minnesota has several state benefits available to eligible Veterans, disabled Veterans, and surviving family members, but too many people do not know what is out there. We hear from Veterans regularly who have missed YEARS of valuable state benefits because they don't know they exist!

A few major benefits include property tax relief, vehicle-related fee and tax exemptions, state park permits, hunting and fishing benefits, education programs, and other assistance.

Eligibility rules vary, so this is only a starting point. If you have questions or need help applying, contact your County Veterans Service Officer, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, or DAV Minnesota.

Please share this with a Veteran or family member who may benefit.
