It has come to my attention that there has been some "questioning" regarding how the storm shelter in Saint Paul is opened. Currently it is opened by members of the Saint Paul Mission Township Fire Department. During the Tornado Warning event today, it was opened (we only open the main entry doors). It takes time to get the storm shelter opened up as we have multiple duties as a Fire Department to take care of.

Our primary objective is to respond to emergency calls as they are dispatched. Firefighter safety is also at the top of the list as well. We are also tasked with storm spotting operations. We also have to take into consideration of vacating our apparatus from the path of the storm in order to ensure we have operational equipment in the case a bad storm hits our area and for future emergency calls.

If you would like to apply and assist with opening up the shelter or have questions regarding our procedures please contact us at one of the following:

At 1120 pm we were dispatched to a gas odor smell in the City of Saint Paul. Upon further investigation and consulting with Kansas Gas that arrived on scene, it was determined that alot of the smell was due to an influx of Mercaptan (is added to natural gas to give it a distinct, unpleasant smell) that had been added to the Natural Gas lines earlier in the day on Wednesday.

We always suggest calling 911 if you smell gas so that it can be handled safely. Especially if you start having any of the following signs and/or symptoms: headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, rapid heart beat, shortness of breath, seizures, chest pain, disorientation, and loss of contiousness.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

A Huge THANK YOU to Frontier Farm Credit!!! We have been awarded a $5000 Grant to assist us in purchasing Portable Radios for ALL the Rural Fire Departments in Neosho County:
Saint Paul Mission Township Fire Department
Erie Fire Department
Thayer Fire Department
Stark Fire Department
Galesburg Volunteer Fire Department

These Radios will be compatible with the State 800mhz system and allow us to communicate with neighboring agencies that are on the State system. These radios will also be vital in the event we have a large-scale incident or Mass Casualty Incident. We also have future plans of having a backup form of communication with our dispatch center. Communication is vital to our mission during all emergent and non-emergent calls we are assigned to. The Saint Paul Mission Township Fire Department & Saint Paul Mission Township Fire Department Auxiliary is very proud to be able to help our agencies throughout Neosho County with this Grant opportunity. Again, THANK YOU for making this a possibility!

We will keep you posted throughout the process.
