❓️ How have marriage and divorce rates have changed over the past decade? How have demographics surrounding these major life events evolved?

➖ Both marriage and divorce rates have decreased.
➕ Age of first marriage has increased for both men and women.
🟰 The proportion of women by marital status has changed very little.

Happy !

August 26th marks the date that the 19th Amendment was certified in 1920, following ratification by the 36 states required to make women's right to vote an official part of the Constitution. Minnesota ratified the 19th Amendment about a year before, on September 8th, 1919. Keep an eye out for our upcoming August newsletter to learn more about the movement for women's suffrage in Minnesota.

- Women make up 38.8% of the legislature as of 2026, compared to 14.4% in 1986.
- Women of color make up 9.45% of the state legislature.
- Minnesota ranks 8th in the country for gender parity in political representation.

On this day in 1976, the Advisory Council on the Economic Status of Women held an organizational meeting, which among other things, began the process to set up the office and hire personnel. The office has changed both physical locations and names over the years, but has been around for 50 years!

Happy Juneteenth! is a state and federal holiday that commemorates the day that the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect across the country. Though the proclamation itself was signed on January 1st, 1863, it took several years for it to go into practice in all states, making June 19th, 1865 the official date of emancipation that we celebrate today.
