MMCD is using drones for mosquito control again in 2026! This year drones will be used in every county to treat areas of standing water with a dry granule that targets mosquito larvae. The drones range in size and fly 150-200ft above the targeted area.

These have been a great tool for getting to mosquito larvae that develop in hard to access areas that are too small for the helicopter and hard for staff to access on foot. Drones have improved efficiency and safety for MMCD staff and are an important part of our Integrated Pest Management program.

WEEKLY BUZZ: Mosquitoes still weren't active last week, but weather had a lot to do with that. We may start seeing activity start to increase this week with warm weather in the forecast! Our next round of surveillance is tonight and we'll have those results in next week's BUZZ!

Mosquito control helicopters will be active today through Friday treating areas with active mosquito larvae. These May treatments will actually reduce the number of mosquitoes around the 4th of July this year. Many of the wetlands being targeted are holding a species known as cattail mosquitoes which overwinter in the water as larvae and emerge once per year, around the beginning of July. This week's treatments are in areas where we found cattail mosquito larvae during surveillance last fall.

MMCD offers FREE tire recycling events! When left outside waste tires become a magnet for mosquitoes looking for a warm, dark area to lay their eggs. Help reduce bites for the whole community by recycling them!

MMCD is holding two tire recycling events in each county this year. All participants must show proof of residency and there is a limit of 10 tires per vehicle.

The Weekly Buzz: Mosquito numbers were very low in the first week of adult surveillance, but black flies were present, especially in the south metro.

We also expect to have helicopters active later this week in areas where mosquito larvae hatched following last night's rain and to begin our treatments for cattail mosquitoes, which are getting ready for their big debut later in June.
