Prisoners are now taken to neighboring counties. The most famous prisoners to spend time in the Howard County Jail were two men by the names of Cole and Grammer. These two were arrested on July 18, 1917 and charged with murder. They were later convicted in Howard County District Court and were the first to be electrocuted in the State of Nebraska. Communications Center:
In 1977 the City of St. Paul and the County of Howard joined into an agreement and formed the St. Paul Howard County Communication Center. The Communication Center receives all calls for the St. Paul Police Department, the Howard County Sheriff's Department, 6 Fire Departments and 6 EMT/QRT Departments. The Howard County Sheriff serves as the Director of the Communication Center.

The Heartland United Way in Grand Island has started a "United After the Storm Fund" for survivors of the May 17 tornadoes that struck near St. Libory. Donations to the fund will assist the families directly impacted by the tornado.

Here is a direct link to the donation site: https://www.heartlandunitedway.org/stlibory

All donated funds are given to the victims. There is a credit card fee associated when using a card.

This resource is also on the home page of the Disaster Education website - https://disaster.unl.edu

Please feel free to share and promote as we do sometimes get questions about where people can make donations.

Thanks so much for all you are doing to help these families and communities.

The support from the community over the last several days has been incredible.

We have seen an amazing amount of donations come in for the families impacted by the tornado damage. Water, Gatorade, clothing, food, hygiene items and countless other supplies have been pouring in from people who wanted to help their neighbors.

We also want to recognize the many volunteers who have been out assisting with cleanup, moving debris, delivering supplies, checking on families and helping however they can. Seeing people come together like this says a lot about our communities and the people in them.

At this point, many of the immediate needs are being met thanks to the generosity everyone has shown.

Going forward, one of the most beneficial ways to help the affected families will be through monetary donations or gift cards. This allows families to purchase the exact items they need as they need them. These donations can be brought to the St. Libory Fire Hall or the Howard County Sheriff's Office where they will be split between the families involved.

Gift cards for grocery stores, gas stations, home improvement stores and general retail stores can make a major difference in helping them rebuild.

Thank you again to everyone who has donated, volunteered, checked on neighbors and supported those affected. The amount of support shown has been nothing short of outstanding.

We have been receiving phone calls with questions about donating to the victims of the recent tornado damage.

The first floor of the Howard County Courthouse will be serving as a drop-off point for donations to assist those affected until 5PM.

After 5PM, the St. Libory Fire Hall will be the drop off point.

We are fortunate to live in an area where people are so willing to help their neighbors. Every donation, no matter the size, can make a difference for someone trying to recover and rebuild.

We appreciate everyone willing to give their time, resources and support.

A look behind the scenes at what your local law enforcement and community partners are building together.

Members of the Central Nebraska SRT recently worked alongside trained medical personnel to evaluate and test their ability to operate in tactical environments.

This included applying emergency medical interventions, moving injured people under stress, and assessing their ability to potentially serve as volunteer tactical medics alongside the team.

This is another example of local people from our own communities stepping forward and volunteering their time, skills and effort to help protect and save lives. These are people willing to spend their free time training for situations they hope never happen, simply because they care about the people around them.

This only happens because communities are willing to work together, train together and build capabilities before they are ever needed.

We greatly appreciate every medical professional and volunteer who continues to support us and stand willing to assist others during some of the worst moments imaginable.
