I almost never put political cartoons on my official side Senate FB page, but this one fits my reaction to what’s going on in our country with all the “mid decade” gerrymandering. It’s bad enough that there has been gerrymandering for a couple hundred years but Thís years’s developments really threaten our democracy. It’s a terrible development for our country and both political parties are now engaged in it. We shouldn’t be talking so much about “who started it” we should be asking “who is going to stop it?”

Gerrymandering makes millions of American voter’s voices LESS likely to be heard. States should make the congressional district boundaries as fair as they can. If we want people to trust our elections we have to avoid stuff like this trend. Just my two cents. Special legislative Update: I’ve heard a lot of concerns from constituents about the urgent need to address fraud within our state, and I agree with those concerns. Basically, we should put people who steal from us in jail, and we should increase our enforcement to prevent fraud in the future.

That is why I am proud today to see final passage - unanimously, with all democrats and republicans - of a bill to establish a new independent Office of the Inspector General (OIG). The new OIG will be empowered to investigate and crack down on fraud within our state, and will ensure transparency and accountability. Special thanks to the Chief Senate author of the bill, my colleague and seat mate Senator Heather Gustafson (DFL Vadnais Heights). She stuck with this bill for over two years, and Minnesota is lucky to have her work on this. The OIG bill will now be sent to the governor’s desk for him to sign.

Thx to all those who reached out to me with their concerns, thank you. Please continue to do so with other pressing matters. Acting on constituent concerns is always a top priority.

Honored to be able to join other legislative leaders to address the Mn Fire Chiefs for their Day on the Hill. We are lucky to have so many dedicated leaders serve our communities. Especially glad to meet my local Fire leaders and say “thanks”. The axe that MN firefighters gave me a few years ago is one of my prized momentos from my legislative service.

Proud to be invited to join other leaders from the Mn Senate and MN House to speak to the Mn Chiefs of Police Association for their Day on the Hill today. We discussed public safety funding, pensions, and which programs are working best. Bottom line is we are asking these Chiefs how best to support the almost 400 police departments around the state.

Especially proud to greet and spend some extra time with North Mankato Chief Ross Gullickson and Mankato Director of Public Safety Jeremy Clifton. Thank you to everybody who works in our district to keep us safe. Special thanks to Amy Vokal for the incredibly high bar she set as the former Mankato safety director Mankato, Minnesota Government Mankato Police and Fire City of Saint Peter, Minnesota City of North Mankato, Minnesota Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association
