June 14th, 2026.
It’s hard to find the words today.
The grief of losing Melissa, Mark and Gilbert.
What John, Yvette and Hope went through.
The personal fear and collective terror that we lived through in those two days.
The festering wound of political violence and hate that caused it all.
All of that feels very real today on the anniversary of this unspeakable tragedy. The longest and shortest year. And so much still to process – personally and as a community – all without the guidance of Melissa and the warm empathy of Mark.
And here we are. Left to figure our way through, to find comfort, purpose, and hope in each other and in the lessons, love, and wisdom that Melissa and Mark gave us:
* Put people at the center of every decision you make.
* Be the force for, not against, change.
* Think, listen, and understand.
* Work harder. Bring people with you.
* Care for the people around you and about the people who aren’t.
* Enjoy each other.
* The details matter.
* So do humility, beauty, and kindness.
* Find a way.
* Serve. Love. Persist.
Our dear Melissa and Mark leave a legacy so much bigger than words, and so much longer than this last year of grief. So today is a good day to resolve to follow their example and learn from their legacy - See the good in people and one another. Believe in progress and work to make it so. Build relationships and bridge differences. Produce rather than perform. And no matter what we face, never give up on the work of our democracy and improving the lives and futures of all Minnesotans.
