The Kiser Mansion, "Garden Glow," built in 1913, represents the distinctive
qualities of the classical revival style. The massive structure is imposing and
recognized for its size and stunning classical white exterior ideally placed in a
garden setting in the center of Saint Paris. Along with the mansion, a carriage
house, wood barn, water tower and brick pump house also are original to the
e
state. The property is listed in the National Register of Historic Places for being
significant as an excellent example of 20th century classical revival architecture. It is one of the most recognizable buildings in Champaign County and has retained
its historic integrity and distinctive architectural details, including its massive
two-story portico, 14 Ionic columns, glazed terra cotta roof tiles, fountains and
Greek-inspired statuary, and interior features like a set of French doors with an
arched glass transom. The Kiser Mansion is recognized in the National Register for
being associated with well-known persons from the past. John Kiser was a successful Champaign County
businessman who operated the Chandler Robbins Sewing Machine Company,
the Monarch Bicycle Company, the Phoenix Horseshoe Company and the
Cincinnati Horseshoe and Iron Company. The Champaign Democrat noted that
Kiser was Champaign County's sole millionaire in 1913.
