I had the opportunity to take part in a candidate non-partisan forum on May 31st sponsored by The Ujima Group. T&D covered the forum and shared a few highlights….. it’s always good to know where candidates stand…
Calhoun County Council District 1
Democratic candidate Felicia Ellis questioned the county's current leadership and some perceived inconsistencies between "what is being done and not what is being said."
She referred to the county's 2024 comprehensive planning process, which she notes highlights population and housing.
"They discuss the population decrease as an issue, yet their zoning efforts or rezoning efforts were to accommodate solar farms," Ellis said. "Now people, I have yet to meet anyone looking to buy or build a home and one of their things on their checklist is to look to build near a solar farm."
"The current council voted to increase taxes on properties that will lose its value due to the same solar farm then they voted to give a million-dollar tax break to a billion-dollar company that is building these solar farms. But this company won't provide one job for the district being directly affected," she said.
"I hope you will join me in taking District 1 off mute," Ellis said.
Ellis said she will communicate with her constituents by having having regular town hall meetings.
Republican incumbent for District 1 Richard Carson, Republican candidate Curt Roosa and Democratic candidate Ronald Johnson were absent.
Please get out and vote on June 11th!!
