I still remember exactly where I was on September 11, 2001.
I had gone home from work to grab a program disk and yes, we still used floppy disks back then. Like a lot of people did, we usually just left the TV on in the house. I walked in only moments after the first plane had hit.
I remember standing there in my living room, just trying to figure out what I was looking at and what was going on. At first, none of it seemed real. I knew I needed to grab what I came for and get back to work, but I had a hard time pulling myself away from the television.
It was scary. It was surreal. And before long, it became absolutely devastating.
There are certain moments in life that just stay with you. You remember where you were, what you were doing, and sometimes even what the room looked like. For an earlier generation, it was the assassination of JFK. For many of us, it was the Challenger disaster. And then there was 9/11.
Those moments become a part of us whether we want them to or not.
I wish we never had to live through days like that. I wish there weren't moments in history that stopped us in our tracks and changed so many lives forever. But there are, and there probably always will be.
All we can really do is try to learn from them. Appreciate the people around us a little more. Be a little kinder. Do a little better. And try, in whatever small way we can, to make life better for the people whose paths cross ours.
Twenty-five years later, I can still picture myself standing in that living room.
Some moments you just never forget.
September 11, 2001, is one of them.
