Elkland Search and Rescue

Elkland Search and Rescue Elkland search and rescue was established in 1985 in Elk county PA Marys, PA area. The building, 28 feet by 42 feet is where we call home.

Elkland Search and Rescue started out in 1984 as a group of about 12 friends whom were concerned about the safety of others in the wilderness that surrounds the St. This concern came after a cargo plane crashed in the middle of winter and the search and recovery mission took several days to find and get to the crash site. This group initially established the "Campowner's Search and Rescue team" wi

th the name "Campowner's" coming from the name of the organization that gave Elkland the use of their building and grounds for meetings and training. As time went on, the group of friends quickly grew as the word spread of their idea to start a Search and Rescue team. Within a few months and numerous meetings the group had by-laws in the works and a Board of Directors in the early stages. They quickly established a command system to handle the "field" of the organization with the Board of Directors in place to handle business of the organization. The board consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and 3 Directors, with one of the Director positions being filled by the Commander of the organization. Due to their quick growth, the group decided to change their name and they became Elkland Search and Rescue named after the County and the animals that roam here. By 1992, the group had grown to around 45 members and was in need of a place to call home, so with the commitment of the team and the gracious gifts of the Elk County community, Elkland built their building to fit their needs.

Today at 12:50pm, Elkland Search and Rescue was requested to assist PSP, Ridgway Barracks at the scene of this search. Elkland Sar responded with 13 members and all equipment. Elkland Sar was also notifying other local emergency departments their assistance may be needed once we were on scene. The individual was located as we were in route.

Elkland Sar would much rather be in route and turn around if not needed, than be needed and the individuals delay in calling for assistance. This delay allows those lost, possibly injured or wondering aimlessly to travel farther away, possibly increasing the search area and delaying medical care.

Lastly, we would also like to acknowledge those businesses, industries and other entities that allow our members to leave work to respond to Emergency Calls! Without Your Support, Our manpower would be Very Limited during working hours!
