Rain Saturday morning put a damper on attendance, but it stopped and the sun came out just as the GGLBA Spring Field Day was getting underway.

About 20 people came and enjoyed a great carry-in meal after which GGLBA President Matt Leiendecker gave a talk about different tools he takes to the beeyard.

Matt also showed off his smoker box and talked about what a help it has been to him, allowing him to easily and safely transport his smoker from one beeyard to another.

After that everyone suited up and headed for the beeyard, where Matt explained how to do a hive inspection, how to read a frame (knowing the difference between nectar, honey, pollen, capped brood and larva), how to find the queen (much easier if she is marked!), and also how to do a "mite wash" to check for varroa levels.

A special thank you goes to Matt Leiendecker for doing the presentations and bringing several nucs to be used for demos in the beeyard and also to Connie Kreischer for grilling the burgers and hot dogs. Thanks to everyone else who participated, brought a dish for the carry-in or contributed in any other way to make the field day a success.

Good morning. The Field Day will be held today rain or shine.

Right now the radar and forecast are showing a little rain before 11:00 AM and then nothing more until around 7:00 PM.

The board is making some additional arrangements so we can provide as much of the content as possible even if the weather does not cooperate.

Pretty much.

From Scott Cohen: It's a fine day for wax dipping. GGLBA member price $5 for hive bodies, $3 for top/bottom boards. Contact Scott at [email protected] if interested.
