Historic St. Marks Lighthouse

Historic St. Marks Lighthouse This is not an official page of the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. The historic St. Marks Lighthouse constructed in 1842 is located in the beautiful St.

Withstanding over a hundred storms, the St. Marks Lighthouse has been a navigational beacon for over a century and a half guiding recreational, military, and merchant vessels from around the world to the mouth of the St. Marks River. The structure consists of the light keeper's house attached to the 80 foot tower, both resting on a 12 foot thick foundation. Eighty-five steps spiral up the brick to

wer to the lantern room, the first seventy-two are wood and the last thirteen are iron. The tower walls are four feet thick at the base, tapering to 18 inches at the top. Over the years oil, kerosene, and electricity have powered the lamp which can be seen up to 15 miles. The currend lens is a replica 4th order Fresnel lens, however the fourth order lens from 1867 is on display in the Visitor Center. The keeper's house has four foot thick brick walls with twelve windows and two chimneys. Two exterior doors open onto the long covered porch. The St. Marks tower pattern has always been white with a black lantern top.

On March 7 1830, 196 yrs ago, the keeper took charge of the St. Marks Lighthouse, moved into the dwelling, and that night the lamps were permanently lit. On the 8th he made an endorsement on the back of the contract stating he did not believe the lighthouse was built in every way according to contract. An arbitrator agreed and the lighthouse was torn down and rebuilt.

From the 1867 Lighthouse Annual Report:
"The work of restoring the station commenced early in September, 1866, and was completed on the 10th December. The materials were in part carried by the launch Pharos from the adjacent stations, Dog Island and St. George, being those remaining after the completion of the repairs at those places. The lumber was purchased up the St. Marks's river at reasonable prices. A lens of the fourth order, fixed, was supplied, and the light was re-exhibited on the night of January 8, 1867. The station is now in good condition."
The lamps were originally fueled with oil, converted to electricity in the 1930's, automated in 1960, and finally extinguished in 2000. In 2014, after 147 years in the tower, the lens was removed, preserved, and is now on display in the refuge Visitor Center.

"Today is National Lighthouse Day! On this day in 1789, the United States Congress approved an Act โ€œfor the establishment and support of lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers.โ€ Two hundred years later, Congress designated August 7th as National Lighthouse Day to commemorate this important moment in history and to celebrate these beautiful structures.
For centuries, lighthouses have served as beacons of light, guiding ships safely to harbor through storms, fog, or dark of night."

The St. Marks Light continues that tradition as a Coast Guard approved, seasonal Private Aid to Navigation.

The St. Marks Lighthouse has had two women as keepers. Both assumed duties after their husbands died. The first, Mrs. Ann Dudley served from Apr. 1850 until Aug. 1854. In 1851 after the death of Needham Dudley, one of the worse hurricanes in history hit the area. She petitioned Congress for compensation for her losses:

"The Committee of Claims, to whom was referred the memorial of Ann Dudley, have had the same under consideration, and report:
"The memorialist has been for several years keeper of the light-house at St. Mark's, Florida. She, with her family and several boarders, resided at the light-house, about ten miles from St. Mark's, at which latter place she obtained her supplies of provisions, except what she was able to raise from her garden. She also raised hogs, poultry, &c. By the unusual gale of August, 1851, which submerged a large portion of the town of St. Mark's, the breakwater which protected the light-house was washed away, and nearly all of Mrs. Dudley's improvements, stock, furniture, and provisions, amounting, as she says, to the value of $1,113, were swept away and destroyed; and she prays that Congress will grant her relief."

She was denied.

One hundred fifty-three years ago, Jan. 8, 1867, the Fresnel lens was installed in the St. Marks Lighthouse tower and remained active until about 2000. The lens was removed in 2014, preserved by the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse & Museum, and is now on display in the refuge visitor center.
