🌟 Day with the Chief 🌟

Today, we were honored to recognize Drew and Lauren during their special Day with the Chief experience, made possible through the KINDNESS Project and the Noyes Home Charity Event.

As part of their day, Drew and Lauren received a behind-the-scenes look at the St. Joseph Police Department, including a tour of the Law Enforcement Center, the Communications Center, the CSI Lab, and the range. They also had the opportunity to learn about the important work of our Special Response Team (SRT) through equipment displays and demonstrations showcasing some of the specialized tools and tactics used to keep our community safe.

Thank you again to Drew and Lauren, the KINDNESS Project, and everyone involved in supporting the Noyes Home and strengthening our community. Together, we continue to make St. Joseph a great place to live, work, and grow.

🎓🚔 Congratulations, Class 66! 🚔🎓

This evening, we proudly celebrate the graduation of Class 66 of the Missouri Western Law Enforcement Academy!

Please join us in congratulating Officer Simpson, Officer Boldridge, Officer Quilty, and Officer Bernhard on this tremendous accomplishment. Graduation from the academy marks the successful completion of months of rigorous training, academic study, physical preparation, and professional development.

While tonight marks the end of the academy, their training is far from over. In the coming weeks, they will complete in-house department training before entering the Field Training Officer (FTO) Program, where they will work alongside experienced officers and gain valuable real-world experience serving our community.

Before long, you'll see these officers patrolling the streets of St. Joseph, answering calls for service, building relationships within our community, and carrying out the mission of protecting and serving.

Congratulations to Officers Simpson, Boldridge, Quilty, and Bernhard on this well-earned achievement. We are proud to have you as part of the SJPD family and look forward to watching your careers develop.

🚔 Transparency Thursday: Code Enforcement Year-to-Date Update 🚔

As we reach the midpoint of the year, we'd like to share a look at the work being done by our Code Enforcement Division to help keep St. Joseph's neighborhoods safe, clean, and attractive.

From January through May 2026, Code Enforcement staff have worked tirelessly to address citizen concerns, improve neighborhood conditions, and encourage voluntary compliance throughout our community.

🏡 Property Maintenance & Abatement

▪️ 891 cubic yards of trash removed
▪️ 296 cubic yards of brush removed
▪️ 514,970 square feet of grass and weeds cut
▪️ 206 tires removed

These efforts help reduce health and safety hazards, improve neighborhood appearance, and enhance quality of life for residents.

📋 Enforcement Activity

▪️ 813 new citizen complaints received
▪️ 1,094 surveyed complaints generated by inspectors
▪️ 3,897 re-inspections conducted
▪️ 9 search warrants served
▪️ 1,640 violation notices mailed
▪️ 17 verbal violation notices issued
▪️ 260 extensions granted
▪️ 1,281 cases brought into compliance by owners or tenants
▪️ 178 complaints determined to be unfounded
▪️ 1,691 administrative penalties issued
▪️ 90 citations issued
▪️ 66 notices posted on properties

One of the most encouraging statistics is that 1,281 properties were brought into compliance by owners or tenants, demonstrating that many residents take pride in their properties and work with Code Enforcement to resolve issues voluntarily.

Thank you to the residents who report concerns and to the property owners who take the necessary steps to address violations. Together, we continue to make St. Joseph a better place to live, work, and raise a family. 💙

🚔 Tip Tuesday: How to Avoid Vehicle Break-Ins 🚔

Vehicle break-ins are often crimes of opportunity. A few simple steps can significantly reduce your chances of becoming a victim.

🔒 Lock Your Doors
Even if you're only leaving your vehicle for a few minutes, always lock your doors and close all windows.

💼 Remove Valuables
Purses, wallets, laptops, backpacks, fi****ms, and other valuables should never be left in plain sight. If possible, take them with you.

📱 Hide Electronics
Phone chargers, GPS mounts, and other accessories can signal that valuable electronics may be inside.

💡 Park in Well-Lit Areas
When possible, choose parking areas that are well-lit and have regular pedestrian or vehicle traffic.

🚗 Don't Leave Keys in Your Vehicle
Never leave your keys, key fob, or spare key inside your vehicle.

🎒 Check Before You Walk Away
Take a quick look through your windows before leaving. If you can see valuables, so can a thief.

📹 Consider Security Cameras
Home security cameras and parking in monitored areas can provide an added layer of protection.

⚠️ If You See Something, Say Something
Report suspicious activity to law enforcement. Your call could help prevent a crime.

Most vehicle break-ins can be prevented by removing temptation and securing your vehicle. Take a few extra seconds before walking away—it could save you time, money, and frustration later.

🎥 🚔 Monday Minute: What Happens During a Traffic Stop? 🚔 🎥

Getting pulled over can be stressful, especially if it's your first time. Knowing what to expect can help make the encounter safer and smoother for everyone involved.

When an officer activates their emergency lights:

🚗 Safely pull over
Signal your intentions and move to the right side of the roadway as soon as it is safe to do so.

🖐️ Stay in your vehicle
Unless directed otherwise, remain inside your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened.

👀 Keep your hands visible
Drivers should keep their hands on the steering wheel, and passengers should keep their hands in plain view.

📄 Be prepared to provide documents
The officer may ask for your driver's license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration.

🎤 The officer will explain the reason for the stop
This could be a traffic violation, equipment issue, or another concern observed while driving.

❓ Answer questions honestly and respectfully
Clear communication helps the stop proceed efficiently.

🚔 The officer will determine the appropriate action
This may include a warning, citation, or other enforcement action depending on the circumstances.

Most traffic stops are completed in just a few minutes. The primary goal is to ensure the safety of everyone on the roadway.

Have a question about police procedures you'd like answered in a future Monday Minute? Drop it in the comments below!
