National Lightning Safety Awareness Week is a great reminder to have a storm safety plan in place before severe weather arrives.

✔️ Identify safe shelter locations
✔️ Postpone outdoor activities when storms are nearby
✔️ Teach children lightning safety rules

Remember: There is NO safe place outdoors during a thunderstorm. Taking a few precautions can save lives.

Did you know lightning strikes the U.S. millions of times every year? Even storms that seem far away can be dangerous. If you hear thunder, you’re close enough to be struck by lightning.

🌩️ Safety reminders:
• When thunder roars, go indoors
• Avoid open fields, tall trees, and water
• Stay away from corded electronics and plumbing during storms
• Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before heading back outside

Updated information regarding the severe weather heading our way today and tomorrow. This doesn't change the fact that you should be weather aware and make sure you're able to receive alerts in multiple ways - not just one!

Severe weather is possible today and tomorrow. Today's threat has been updated to a Slight Risk with two lines of storms moving through with the biggest threats damaging winds and large hail, but isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out. The stronger severe weather threat is Wednesday and Wednesday night when all hazards are on the table. Have multiple ways to receive weather warnings!

Be prepared for some storms this afternoon and evening!⛈️Tomorrow we are looking at some severe weather throughout the day and into the evening. Make sure to be weather aware and have multiple ways to receive alerts.

Severe weather is possible today and tomorrow. Two lines of storms move through today with the best threat of producing damaging winds, but the other threats cannot be ruled out. Berrien County is at an Enhanced Risk (Level 3) for severe storms this evening. Make sure to have multiple ways to receive alerts:
1) Wireless emergency alerts (like an amber alert)
2) B-WARN! - a sign up system for landline phones, cell phones, pagers, etc. - https://www.berriencounty.org/1283/B-WARN
3) NOAA Weather radios
4) Marine band radios (for Lake MI)

We are also in a heat advisory from 12pm-8pm. Stay hydrated, take breaks in the A/C if possible, check on vulnerable populations, and NEVER leave kids or pets in a vehicle unattended.

⛈️Berrien County is in the path of severe weather Wednesday evening into Thursday morning (slight risk, 2) and greater concern Thursday evening into Friday morning (enhanced risk, 3). Damaging winds are the primary threat with large hail and isolated tornadoes as the secondary threat.
🔥Berrien County is in a heat advisory with heat indices around 100 degrees. High temperatures and high humidity are to blame. Make sure to stay hydrated, wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, check on vulnerable populations, and never leave kids or pets alone in a vehicle!
