THE $380 MILLION MYSTERY

If you’re a resident of Coldwater, you probably woke up Wednesday morning feeling a little bit lighter. On Tuesday night, common sense actually won. You and your neighbors looked at a staggering $64 million school bond—a massive debt package that the people in charge said was "vital" and you rejected it.

It was the third time in five years that the "experts" at the school board office have tried to shake you down for a new building, and it was the third time you told them "No."

But why did they need $64 million? They’ll tell you "it's for the kids." They’ll tell you the classrooms don't meet "modern safety standards." They’ll act as if they’ve been living on a diet of crumbs and hope for the last decade.

But we looked at the books. We looked at the numbers they don't put in the colorful brochures. And what we found should make every taxpayer in the county demand an audit.

Take a look at this ledger. This is what Coldwater Community Schools has spent over the last ten years.

THE COLDWATER COMMUNITY SCHOOLS DECADE OF SPENDING (2016–2026)

Fiscal Year. Spending. Students
| 2016-2017 | $31,100,000 | 2,825 |
| 2017-2018 | $32,500,000 | 2,820 |
| 2018-2019 | $34,200,000 | 2,799 |
| 2019-2020 | $36,100,000 | 2,863 |
| 2020-2021 | $37,400,000 | 2,755 |
| 2021-2022 | $38,485,000 | 2,801 |
| 2022-2023 | $39,800,000 | 2,756 |
| 2023-2024 | $41,200,000 | 2,744 |
| 2024-2025 | $42,500,000 | 2,740 |
| 2025-2026 | $43,800,000 | 2,730 |

Total Spent: $377,085,000

Nearly $380 million dollars. That is what has flowed through Coldwater Community Schools since 2016. For a district that serves barely 2,700 students. Think about that. You have spent nearly $140,000 per student over the last ten years.

If you spent $380 million on a town of Coldwater’s size, you should have gold-plated chalkboards and a teacher for every three kids. Instead, Superintendent Paul Flynn—who enjoys a salary of over $186,000 a year plus benefits—is telling you the buildings are falling apart.

If they’ve spent $380 million in ten years, and the buildings are still in "poor condition," where did the money go?

It didn't go into the classrooms. It didn't go into improving the "learning environment" they keep talking about. It went into the machine. It went to a bloated administration that grows even as enrollment remains flat or declines. They are spending **$16,000 per student, per year** just to keep the status quo, yet they still want $64 million more from you for "infrastructure."

It is a failure of management on a historic scale.

And they think you’re too dim to notice the pattern. They ask for $67 million in 2021. You say no. They ask for $53 million in 2022. You say no. So, what do they do? Do they cut waste? Do they tighten their belts like you have to do at your kitchen table? No. They wait two years and ask for $64 million. The arrogance is breathtaking. They aren't asking for your permission; they are trying to wear you down until you stop voting. They want you to believe that a "shiny" new school is the only way to save your children’s education.

But here’s the truth they’ll never admit: A fancy new hallway doesn't teach a kid how to read. A $64 million renovation doesn't improve a graduation rate. Discipline, high standards, and prioritizing students over administrative salaries do that.

The people of Coldwater didn't just reject a bond this week. They rejected a lie. They rejected the idea that a school district can spend $380 million in a decade and still come back begging for more.

They don't have a funding problem. They have a trust problem. And after seeing these numbers, why would anyone ever trust them with another dime?

Keep reading this caption if you’ve ever wanted to learn how to finally hit that beautiful draw instead of watching your ball slice into the rough ⛳️

A draw is one of the most controlled and powerful ball flights in golf—it starts slightly right of your target (for right-handed golfers) and gently curves back towards the middle. Not only does it give you more distance, but it also helps you control your misses and hit fairways more consistently.

Here’s the simple breakdown from the graphic above 👇

🎯 Target Line = 12 o’clock
Always imagine your main target as straight ahead at 12. This keeps your alignment consistent.

🏌️ Clubface = 1 o’clock
Set your clubface slightly closed compared to your body alignment, pointing just right of the target. This is key for starting the ball right before it curves back.

👣 Feet & Body = 2 o’clock
Align your stance, shoulders, and hips to the right of the target. You’re setting up an “inside-out” swing path.

➡️ Swing Path = Towards 2 o’clock
Now swing along your body line—towards 2 o’clock. With the face slightly closed to that path, the ball will start right and gently draw back.

💡 Pro Tip: Start with half-swings at the range to feel the path before going full speed. The key is controlling the face-to-path relationship. Too closed = hook, too open = push or slice.

Mastering the draw is a game-changer—it adds distance, looks amazing in the air, and helps you attack pins with confidence.

The #1 Fundamental in Golf: Your Grip
Before you worry about swing plane, tempo, or adding power—you’ve got to master how you hold the club. Your grip controls the clubface, and the clubface controls your ball flight. Get this wrong, and no swing change will save you.

Here’s the breakdown of the three main grip styles:

👉 Neutral Grip (the baseline)

Position your lead hand so you see about 2 knuckles when you look down.

The “V’s” made by your thumbs and index fingers should point between your trail ear and trail shoulder.

This keeps the clubface square through impact—ideal for straighter, more consistent shots.

👉 Strong Grip (slice-fighter)

Rotate your lead hand slightly to the right until you can see 3–4 knuckles.

The “V’s” will point well outside your trail shoulder.

This helps shut the clubface at impact, a go-to move for slicers.
⚠️ Overdo it, and you’ll start hooking the ball left.

👉 Weak Grip (hook-fighter)

Rotate your lead hand left until you see just 1 knuckle—or none at all.

The “V’s” will aim toward your lead shoulder.

This leaves the face more open, which helps players who fight hooks or pulls.
⚠️ Too weak, and you’ll sacrifice distance while pushing shots right.

✅ Pro Tip: Stand in front of a mirror and check your “V’s.” Once you’ve got the right setup, hit some half-swings at the range to see how your ball reacts. Small grip tweaks can completely change your ball flight—sometimes instantly.

Remember: your swing begins in your hands. Nail the grip, and everything else gets easier.

Hi everyone-

As you may already know, unfortunately, I did not win the election for the St. Johns Public Schools Board of Education. I would, however, like to thank all of those who supported me in my effort to make a difference for our schools, students, teachers, administrators and our community. The challenges that our community and our public schools face is enormous. It is going to take great leadership to meet and guide our schools and community during this time. I wish all the best to the new school board and pray for God’s grace and guidance.
I would also like to thank God for giving me this opportunity to serve Him in this way. Although I did not win, I know God is good and He has a reason for everything. I would also like to thank my family for their support, especially my wife Betsy and my daughter Lisa Mancuso who ran my Facebook campaign. Thanks again for all your support and votes.

Pass along this information. Need to get the word out.

I have been a resident of the City of St. Johns since 1977. I have voted in almost all public elections and I am passionate for our country, our representative form of government, education of our children, our community, our families and our future. I hold a Christian World view and I was an active member of the former First Congregational Church of St. Johns. I served Jesus Christ there as a Sunday school teacher and as an Adult Bible study group leader. As a member I also fulfilled my membership responsibilities by attending, giving, and served on many boards including Christian Education.
I am an avid reader and believe that the St. Johns community is a wonderful community based on its history and people. Being a resident for over forty years I have been part of much of current history. I am a founding member of the St. Johns Kiwanis Club 707, worked in our community at the former Clinton Memorial Hospital and Clinton County Medical Center. I have also worked in our community as a small business and residential sales representative for ADT Security Services, retiring in 2020. I have also been a small business owner (Progressive Management Group currently operating as R. Fuller and Associates) and hold an Associate’s degree in Science and Technology from Ferris State University and BS from Western Michigan University in Health Studies.
My wife, Betsy and I have two adult children who graduated from St Johns High School in 2000 and 2004. They both are residents of St. Johns and have children attending our city elementary and middle schools.
My main reason for running for this position is for my concern for the quality of education for our students in our public school. As an engaged citizen I have observed that St. Johns Public Schools have always been valued by many sources as a quality school system providing excellent results. These results are reflected in obtainment of an excellent academics education, sports participation, arts education and participation, industrial arts and community support through student volunteer organizations.
Unfortunately, since about 2013, I have noticed a significant change in the attitude of our local leadership with regards to this historic focus on providing for your community excellence in education. I have noticed a shift from this historical and notable focus of educational excellence and outcomes of our students to one of money for operating our schools and on other outside agendas. I believe we need to return our focus back to education excellence of our students and achieving better outcomes for all our students.
I am well aware that our Public Schools are controlled by the State of Michigan Legislature under the direction of the State of Michigan School Superintendent office for funding and many of the programs, and agendas put forth by these state entities.
As your local school board member and representative, I believe it is my responsibility to be your watchdog and keep you informed of any and all things that are going to affect the education of your student. As your elected representative I also believe I have a responsibility to be your voice to our community school board and Superintendent regarding legitimate related school operation issues. To this end I pledge to do my very best to be engaged with you on important issues.
Thank you for your vote. It would be my honor to serve you and our community in this capacity.
