WILDFIRE AWARENESS IN WASHINGTON
Wildfires affect much more than the land within the fire line. Smoke, ash, and the loss of vegetation can influence the air we breathe, the soil beneath our feet, and the water that moves through our communities.
Wildfire smoke can travel long distances and contains fine particles known as PM2.5. These particles can pe*****te deep into the lungs, increasing risks for children, older adults, pregnant people, outdoor workers, and those with heart or lung conditions.
The environmental effects can also continue after the flames are gone. When fire removes the vegetation protecting the soil, rainfall can increase erosion, runoff, flooding, and debris flows. Ash, sediment, nutrients, metals, and other debris may then be carried into nearby streams, lakes, and rivers, affecting water quality and aquatic habitat.
As wildfires continue to affect communities across Eastern Washington, please follow trusted local sources for current evacuation notices and fire information. Assistance is also available for families, agricultural producers, and livestock owners who have experienced losses or displacement.
