๐Ÿ“š A Glimpse Into the Past ๐Ÿ“š

As the library prepares for another Summer Reading Program, we thought it would be fun to share a piece of local history.

In the 1950s, story time for young readers was often held in Lucyโ€™s Playhouse, located behind the library. At a time when libraries were becoming important community gathering places, children would gather in the little playhouse to hear stories, explore new ideas, and develop a lifelong love of reading.

More than seventy years later, Lucyโ€™s Playhouse remains in the same location, standing as a unique reminder of the libraryโ€™s history and the generations of children who passed through its doors. While many things have changed over the decades, the libraryโ€™s mission of encouraging literacy, learning, and imagination continues today just as it did then.

As we kick off this yearโ€™s Summer Reading Program, we celebrate not only the books and activities ahead, but also the rich history and traditions that have made our library a treasured part of the community for generations. ๐Ÿ“–โœจ

Thank you to St. James Utilities, Intercounty Electric, the St. James Police Department, and everyone who stood watch in the rain at the overpass today as two veterans passed through our community on their final journey home.

Your willingness to take a few moments out of your day to honor these heroes demonstrated the respect and gratitude our community has for those who served our nation. Even in the rain, your presence ensured they were met with dignity and remembrance as they traveled to their final resting places.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this tribute possible. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Honor Es**rt for Two American Heroes ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

We are calling on all residents, veterans, patriotic organizations, civic groups, and supporters to join us in honoring two American heroes as they pass through our community on their final journey home.

On Saturday, June 13, the South-Central Missouri Patriot Guard Riders will es**rt the cremated remains of two United States Army veterans, Captain James Robert Kirkpatrick and Tech Sergeant Fourth Class Floyd Casey, through Missouri as they travel to their final resting places.

The es**rt is expected to arrive in the area during the morning hours. Community members are encouraged to gather on the west side of the St. James overpass sidewalk, facing toward Rolla, to show their gratitude, respect, and support for these two heroes and the Patriot Guard Riders who are ensuring they receive the dignity and honor they have earned.

Captain James Robert Kirkpatrick served with distinction during the Vietnam War, earning numerous awards, including the Bronze Star Medal with โ€œVโ€ Device for heroism in combat.

Tech Sergeant Fourth Class Floyd Casey served during World War II with the 76th Signal Corps and participated in the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhineland Campaign, and the Central Europe Campaign.

This is an opportunity for our community to come together and demonstrate that service and sacrifice are never forgotten.

What an incredible morning and early afternoon in St. James!

Thousands of amazing hot rods and classic cars rolled through town today, and what stood out even more than the vehicles themselves were the people behind the wheel. The participants of the Hot Rod Power Tour were absolutely outstanding. Many handed out Hot Wheels cars, tokens, and keepsakes to children along the route, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was watching drivers slow down and take extra time as they passed the Missouri Veterans Home, making sure our veterans had the opportunity to enjoy every car.

As vehicles stopped for fuel, food, and breaks, countless drivers took the time to visit with community members and proudly show off their cars. Over and over, we heard the same message: they loved St. James.

Visitors commented on how welcoming our community was, how clean and well-maintained our town looked, and how friendly everyone had been. They appreciated the smiles, waves, cheers, and applause from spectators lining the streets. Many mentioned how impressed they were to see our veterans included in the day's festivities and how helpful our local businesses were whenever assistance was needed. Several even took note of our officer working the intersection, commenting on how friendly, professional, and engaging he was throughout the day.

Today was a shining example of what makes St. James such a special place. From residents and businesses to volunteers and community supporters, everyone played a part in showcasing the very best of our hometown.

Thank you to everyone who came out to watch, wave, cheer, and welcome our guests. Thank you to our local businesses for supporting both visitors and residents throughout the day. And thank you to every Hot Rod Power Tour participant for choosing to make St. James part of your journey.

The cars were amazing, but the kindness, hospitality, and sense of community on display today were even better. St. James truly put its best foot forward, and we couldn't be more proud of our community.

Safe travels to everyone continuing on the tour, and thank you for making St. James a stop to remember!
