πŸ“‘ Emergency Communications Explained – Weekly Series

Have you ever wondered what happens after you call 9-1-1?

Every emergency call begins with information. Communications Specialists answer the call, gather critical details, notify responders, and continue supporting the incident as it unfolds.

You may be asked several questions, even after help has already been dispatched. Those questions help responders understand the situation, prepare for what they are responding to, and receive updates while they are on the way.

This is the first post in our new Emergency Communications Explained series, where we’ll take a closer look at how emergency communications works and what happens behind the scenes when someone calls for help.

🚨 May 2026 Public Safety Activity Report 🚨

As Columbia County heads into the summer months, demand for public safety services continues to increase.

In May, Columbia 9-1-1 Communications District answered:

πŸ“ž 7,506 total phone calls
☎️ 2,097 emergency 9-1-1 calls

Compared to April, that’s an increase of:

⬆️ 746 total calls (+11.0%)
⬆️ 248 emergency 9-1-1 calls (+13.4%)

Our dispatchers also coordinated 5,880 public safety activities across Columbia County, including:

πŸš” 4,086 law enforcement activities
🚦 693 traffic stops
πŸš’ 256 fire incidents
πŸš‘ 845 EMS responses

Public safety activity increased across every major discipline from April to May, with EMS responses rising nearly 15% and overall activity increasing almost 6%.

Every one of these numbers represents a citizen needing help, a responder needing support, or a situation requiring immediate coordination.

Behind these statistics is a team of 11 certified dispatchers and 2 dispatchers in training working around the clock to support the law enforcement, fire, and EMS agencies that serve Columbia County.

Whether it’s answering a 9-1-1 call, dispatching emergency response, coordinating resources during a critical incident, or helping keep first responders safe in the field, our dispatchers are the first link in the chain of public safety.

Thank you to all of our public safety partners and to the citizens we are privileged to serve every day.

Ever wonder how a 9-1-1 center plans for staffing, equipment, technology upgrades, and the resources needed to answer calls for help 24/7?

That process starts with the budget.

The Columbia 9-1-1 Communications District Board of Directors will be holding its regular monthly meeting and budget hearing, where district leadership reviews proposed funding, operational needs, future projects, and the financial planning that helps keep emergency communications running across Columbia County.

Budget hearings are a public process designed to provide transparency, accountability, and an opportunity for community involvement. They allow residents to see how public safety funding is proposed to be allocated and ask questions or provide comment before decisions are finalized.

Community members are welcome to attend in person or virtually.

Serving our community starts long before a 9-1-1 call comes in - it starts with planning for the people, training, and technology behind every answer.
