In 2014, the Utah Humanities Book Festival recognized the St. George Book Festival as its SISTER festival. Making the St. George Book Festival #1 in Southern Utah for literary, author and book expo events. The book festival has also become Southern Utah's signature literary event. Utah Humanities, Southern Utah Literacy Council and Heritage Writers Guild's (a chapter of the League of Utah Writers)

have partnered together to bring this annual festival to the St. George community and surrounding areas, allowing us to explore literacy and interact with great writers. Each year, the book festival is a chance for book lovers of all ages and genres to enjoy some great, free-of-charge literary events at locations throughout the St. George community, surrounding areas and state-wide. General information

Among our current programs is the annual St. George Book Festival, writing workshops, discussion groups, community readings, and other literacy and humanities building programs for youth, teens and adults. To offer these programs, we partner and collaborate with the Utah Humanities, Heritage Writers Guild (a chapter of the League of Utah Writers), the St. George Children's Museum, Washington County Library System and Washington County School District; along with many types of organizations: college, civic and service organizations, public and online radio, art councils and others. While we serve the St. George community and its surrounding areas, we occasionally undertake temporary initiatives that focus on selected topics, targeted audiences or geographic locations. A volunteer board of directors and committee, representing a wide variety of communities, makes policy, directs planning and evaluates programs. The Southern Utah Literacy Council is supported by generous contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations and receives public support from the City of St. George and its surrounding communities. We are not an English-as-a-Second-Language program. Many other organizations within Washington County and Southern Utah offer and teach these adults to speak English. Vision To adapt to a changing world, of computers, cell phones and social media, while creating new ideas and understanding ideas from the past. While technology can make our lives easier, the humanities and literacy have the power to make our lives better. Without the study of history, religion, languages, philosophy and culture, we will never understand those we reach through technology. To feel fully human at home, we need the inspiration and understanding of novels, plays and poems, art, drama and music. Mission To foster the growth and development of the humanities and literary culture in the St. George community and its surrounding areas through literacy programs, outreach and the arts of Southern Utah. To encourage and promote the arts in the St. George community and its surrounding areas for the purpose of enriching and improving the lives of its residents and visitors. To empower the St. George community and its surrounding areas to improve their communities through active engagement in the humanities and literacy, giving those in our communities the skills and abilities to participate actively in all contexts of their lives, as family members, workers and community participants as well as to further their personal development. This will be accomplished through the creation, advocacy and facilitation of humanities and literacy programming; along with partnering with individuals and groups who want to put the humanities and literacy ideas into actions that have positive impact on the St. George community and its surrounding areas.
