Abortion remains a significant legal, medical, & personal issue across the United States, & Utah is no exception. With changing laws & ongoing court cases, it can be difficult to understand what is currently allowed & what restrictions are in place.

Abortion is currently legal in Utah, but it is limited & regulated under state law. A near-total abortion ban was passed by the Utah Legislature & triggered after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. However, that law is currently blocked by the courts while legal challenges continue.
At this time:
• Abortion is permitted up to 18 weeks of pregnancy
• Court rulings have paused stricter laws that would significantly reduce access
This means individuals can still seek abortion services within the legal timeframe & under specific medical & legal requirements.

After 18 weeks gestation, abortion is generally not allowed unless certain exceptions apply. Exceptions include:
• Serious risk to the life / major bodily health of the mother
• Fetal conditions that are considered incompatible with life
• Pregnancy resulting from r**e / in**st
In cases involving r**e / in**st, Utah law generally requires that the incident be reported to law enforcement for the exception to apply.

What to Do If You’re Pregnant & Unsure
Facing an unexpected pregnancy can feel overwhelming, but you are not alone. Taking time to gather information & support can help you make a confident & informed decision.

A medical/chemical abortion is when medication is used to terminate an early pregnancy and consists of two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone is taken first and begins the abortion process by blocking the hormone progesterone, a vital proponent in supporting a pregnancy. By blocking progesterone, the lining of the uterus begins to breakdown, and the baby cannot receive the nutrients necessary to stay alive. The second medication, Misoprostol, is then taken 24-48 hours after mifepristone. Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and bleed to expel the fetal tissue. The process for a complete chemical abortion can take anywhere from 2-3 days from the moment the woman takes the first pill.

Side Effects
Before you decide to take the abortion pill, it is important to be aware of the potential side effects that may be experienced. Pain, cramping, and bleeding are the most common symptoms experienced when having a chemical abortion. Women have also reported experiencing gastrointestinal upset, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, in some cases being very extreme, causing severe dehydration requiring medical attention. Other symptoms may include fever, chills, headaches, and excessive bleeding, or hemorrhage. If you have taken the abortion pills and are experiencing bleeding that soaks through two large sanitary pads in an hour, it is important to seek immediate medical attention. In some cases, the abortion pills have not worked effectively to terminate the pregnancy, in which case it is important to see a physician as soon as possible, as surgical intervention may be necessary.
