West Feliciana Parish Assessor's Office

West Feliciana Parish Assessor's Office Welcome to the official West Feliciana Parish Assessor's Office page. For more information The following are duties of the Assessor:
1.)

The Assessor is the elected official responsible for establishing the value of property (real and personal) for ad valorem tax purposes. The “ad valorem” basis of taxation means all property is to be taxed solely according to its value. Locate and identify all taxable property in the jurisdiction(discover)
2.) Make an inventory of all taxable property, including quantity, quality, and important ch

aracteristics
3.) Classify each property and determine the extent to which it is taxable
4.) Estimate the fair market value of each taxable property(value)
5.) Calculate the taxable value of each property
6.) Prepare and certify the assessment roll of the entire jurisdiction(list)
7.) Notify the owners of the taxable value of their properties
8.) Defend value estimates and valuation methods during appeals

The Assessor does not raise or lower taxes and does not make the laws which affect property owners. The Louisiana Constitution provides the basic framework for ad valorem taxation, the Louisiana Tax Commission establishes the rules and regulations for assessment purposes and the Sheriff’s Office, as Ex-Officio Tax Collector, collects the tax dollars levied by the various taxing jurisdictions such as school boards, parish councils or law enforcement districts.

We’ve updated our online mapping system!

New features include:
• An enhanced details window with expanded property information, including all listed owners and tax items
• Faster refresh times while browsing
• Improved tools, including the ability to drop a location point
• Two search options: a simplified “Google-style” search and an advanced search with additional filters to help locate property

This system is brand new, in fact, we are the first in the state to have it. I’m excited to see how it continues to improve as our vendor, Preases, adds new features over time.

As with any new system, there may be a learning curve. If you have any questions while navigating it, please don’t hesitate to reach out, we’re happy to help!

Exciting times for our Parish!

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about the new Data Center project and with all the excitement, we know there are also plenty of questions and rumors about what it could mean for our property taxes.

We want to be upfront: property taxes aren’t going to “disappear” because of the Data Center.

That said, projects like this can have a positive impact on our local tax base. For example, when Riverbend was added, we saw a 14-mill reduction to our millage rate thanks to the increase in taxable value, and with that property owners saw a decrease in their taxes immediately.

We’re still in the very early stages of this process, so it’s too soon to know exactly what kind of effect this project will have. However, we promise to keep everyone updated as we learn more.

Here’s a link to the WBRZ report on the first Industrial Board meeting if you’d like to check it out:

The West Feliciana Parish Council has devised a unique way to get as much money as possible out of a planned data center development, potentially generating nearly $100 million each year.

We wanted to make our residential property owners aware of bills, which are being introduced and would call for constitutional amendments. The passing of these bills will affect property assessments.

There are two bills which will change the income threshold for the purpose of qualifying for a special assessment level, also known as a 65 Freeze. HB 269 will increase the income threshold to $200,000 while HB 300 will remove the income threshold.

There are also two bills which will adjust the Homestead Exemption credit. HB 271 will increase the amount of the Homestead Exemption to $125,000 while SB 56, a constitutional amendment, will allow the governing authority of a parish to increase the homestead exemption up to $225,000

We are monitoring them and will provide updates as they make their way through the process.
