Ken Dunbeck: Father, Educator, Advocate - Public Page Father. Educator. Advocate. Sharing updates, information, and perspective on schools and community issues. Not an official school board or school district account.

All opinions shared are my own and do not represent any school board or district position. This is a candidate page and does necessarily not reflect the positions or beliefs of the SFSD or Board. All posts are my personal views. As a father of a preschooler and an educator I have a long term interest in the success and academic strength of our district. I see school districts across the country where schools are banning books, censoring history, and limiting academic debate in classrooms. I do not want to see that happen in our community.

Everyone deserves collective bargaining rights. Happy Labor Day everoyone!

Happy Labor Day from the educators of WEAC.

Every good thing in a Wisconsin school contract was bargained by people who did this job before us. In 2011, Act 10 took nearly all of it off the table. Wisconsin needs a governor and a legislature committed to worker rights. Both are on the ballot November 3.

WEAC members, it's as easy as one, two, three:

1. Learn the stakes. See who educators recommended at weac.org/vote.
2. Check your registration at myvote.wi.gov. Takes 60 seconds.
3. Ask three friends to do the same, and ask them to text you back when it's done.

Keep cool out there. It's important for kids to get outside and play, days like this let's make sure everyone is safe. Sun screen, water breaks, and maybe some indoor time at the library, museum, or inside playing board games.

🌡️HEAT ADVISORY 🌡️

The US National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan Wisconsin has issued a Heat Advisory beginning tomorrow at 12:00 PM through Wednesday at 8 PM. Heat index values could reach 100°F, creating dangerous conditions for everyone.

☀️ Take precautions to stay safe:
• Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
• Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
• Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.
• Check on older adults, neighbors, and those with medical conditions who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illness.

❄️ If you need a place to cool off, South Milwaukee and St. Francis have cooling centers available. See the graphic below for locations and hours.

🌊 Looking for another way to beat the heat? Milwaukee County pools, splash pads, and wading pools are open throughout the county. Check the daily open status before you head out: https://county.milwaukee.gov/EN/Parks/Explore/Pools/Open-Status

Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If someone shows signs of heat stroke—such as confusion, loss of consciousness, or a body temperature above 103°F—call 911 immediately.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe!

I am a major supporter of cellphone bans in school during school hours. The data is clear that they hurt our kids. I also STRONGLY believe schools need to rethink Edtech and 1:1 computers in classrooms, especially at the younger grade levels. I believe we need to return to books, paper, and pencil. Computers have their place, but they should never have replaced books and paper in our classrooms.

“Was it this easy the whole time?” Teacher Jonathan Buchwalter goes viral on TikTok talking about the positive impact of a cellphone-free classroom.

We need to invest our state's tax money in public schools to ensure student education is fully funded instead of siphoning off tax money to voucher and charter schools that are not held to the same standards as public schools.

People have a right to know where their tax money is going, instead the current system disguises it on the tax bills so many people that money is going all to public schools.

Just a reminder that $0 in new general aid was provided to public schools in 2025-2026.

Voucher schools got more guaranteed state aid. Independent charter schools got more guaranteed state aid. Public schools got "base" - the same amount allocated in the prior budget with no adjustment for inflation. $0 in new spendable aid, despite concerning increases in both costs and needs. $0 this year and $0 next year. And a promise for a level of special education funding that was not kept.

Please keep this in mind when you hear people complaining about cuts, shortfalls, referenda, and candidates for elected office who are or aren't being honest.
