Kane County Coroner, Dr. Monica Silva, and the staff of the Kane County Coroner’s Office extend our deepest condolences to the Chicago Police Department, the family of Officer John Bartholomew, and all those affected by this tragic loss.

We also keep the injured officer and their loved ones in our thoughts as they continue to recover.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends, and members of the Chicago Fire Department on the loss of Firefighter Michael Altman.

We recognize the dedication and service required of those in the fire service, and the profound impact this loss has on both his loved ones and his department.

Update to Missing Person Investigation Now Classified as a Death Investigation

On February 17, 2026, at approximately 5:42 p.m., the Elgin Fire Department responded to the area of the Fox River near the 100 block of North Center Street in South Elgin, to assist the South Elgin Fire Department who received information that a deceased subject was located near the dam.

Detectives from the Major Investigations Division and the Kane County Coroner's Office arrived on scene, and subsequently, the Elgin Fire Department and South Elgin Fire Department recovered an adult male from the river.

On February 18, 2026, an autopsy was conducted by the Kane County Coroner’s Office. The Coroner positively identified the decedent as Mr. Ulises “Miguel” Segura Dorantes, age 53, who had been reported as missing to the Elgin Police Department on November 29, 2025. The Kane County Coroner, Dr. Monica Silva, advised the preliminary cause of death to be drowning. Toxicological samples were collected and sent to a forensics laboratory for analysis.

We wish to thank the Elgin community and beyond for information that was provided for this investigation and extend our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Segura Dorantes.

KANE COUNTY CORONER IDENTIFIES BODY OF MISSING ADULT MALE

Kane County, IL – The body of an adult male who had been formally reported missing by his family on January 22, 2026, was recovered from Jelkes Creek in West Dundee, IL on February 2, 2026. The Kane County Coroner was immediately notified, and with the assistance of the Elgin Fire Department, the decedent was transported to the Kane County Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy was performed on February 4, 2026, where the individual was positively identified as 52-year-old Joseph L. Johnson Jr., of Elgin, IL. The preliminary cause of death appears to be drowning, pending toxicology results. Toxicology samples were collected and will be undergoing testing at a forensic laboratory.
Kane County Coroner, Dr. Monica Silva, and her staff, extend their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Joseph Johnson Jr. The Coroner’s Office is working closely with Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley, and her team. The investigation into the death remains ongoing.

At approximately 1655 hours on January 21, 2026, the Kane County Coroner’s Office was notified by the Fox Valley Major Crimes Task Force of an officer-involved shooting in Aurora, Illinois, which resulted in a death. The decedent, identified as 27-year-old Temesgen Welendreyas of Aurora, Illinois, was transported to the Kane County Morgue. An autopsy was conducted on January 23, 2026. The preliminary cause of death is attributed to gunshot wounds. Toxicology samples have been collected and sent for further forensic analysis. The Kane County Coroner’s Office is collaborating with the Fox Valley Major Crimes Task Force as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
