On April 14th around 10:40 PM, your Tri-Twp FFs were dispatched to an ATV accident during a severe thunderstorm. The only information that the victims could provide, was that they thought that they were wrecked in a field near Fergus Road and Gasper Road. First responders from the Saginaw County SO, MSP Post 31, St. Charles PD and MMR converged in that vicinity.

The accident site could not be initially located. A frantic search ensued in all directions of that intersection. Saginaw County 911 utilized the caller's cellular data and determined that the crash site would be north of Fergus on Gasper Rd.

The fields were flooded and extremely muddy. The rain was heavy and the wind was intense. Due to the anticipated location of the site, fire apparatus and ambulances had to remain staged near Fergus and Gasper. First responders and LE agencies, utilizing 4WD vehicles, a commandeered ATV from Retired FF Ken Theile, and POV's responded to the updated report of the crash site, which was about a half mile from the main roads. Still the accident site was not located. The first responders then set out on a grid search, that was executed by walking the fields, and through the use of 4WD vehicles to locate the two victims. Eventually, YOUR first responders could hear the agonizing screams of both injured parties.

Medics from MMR were trucked into the crash site, via 4WD trucks, with lifesaving equipment. Both parties were triaged and stabilized. The arduous task of transporting them from the crash site to the awaiting ambulances was a challenge. Both victims were placed into the backs of pickups. The rain-soaked terrain was treacherous, and the weather was not cooperating.

At 11:48 PM, while the victims were being transported to the casualty collection point via pick-ups, Saginaw County 911 notified us that we were under a tornado warning, and that we were in the potential path of the funnel cloud.

Personnel at the staging area/casualty collection point were ordered to shelter in their emergency apparatus. First responders still at the crash site were ordered to find a low spot for protection. Meanwhile the victims continued to be transported to the ambulance.

Eventually, the victims were transferred to the awaiting ambulances with life threatening injuries. They were immediately evacuated to a local hospital.

With the victims no longer were harm's way, your TRI-TWP FFs began the task of pulling out stuck police vehicles, that had become stuck in the fields. And at the same time, the tornado passed by.

Rain soaked, muddy and tired, your Tri-Twp FFs were far from being able to return home.

Their next task?

They immediately responded to assist the Albee TWP FD with a house-to-house search, where the tornado had apparently touched down about a mile away, causing devastating damage.

In the end? Both victims were evacuated and transported to a hospital for treatment. No injuries were reported to any of the first responders. Our neighbors in Albee Township, were all accounted for. The tornado injured no one that we are aware of. For a complex extrication, and a tornado response at the same time? We will take the win.

Why did more than 50% of YOUR Tri-Twp FFs show up to rescue strangers during a tornado? Because it is what OUR community expects. And this is what OUR commnity deserves.

A huge shout out to Saginaw County 911 for assisting in locating the crash site. Happy telecommunications week to each and every one of you. Thank you for always having that calm voice, while we are knee deep in chaos.

From the Saginaw County Emergency Manager

Your alerting devices should have gone off for the two tornado warnings issued in Saginaw County early this morning. If they didn’t, it’s worth asking yourself how you’re receiving alerts. Everyone should have multiple reliable alerting methods — including at least one that can wake you up overnight. NOAA Weather Radios are excellent for this.

The National Weather Service issued warnings when radar indicated tornado activity, and its survey teams have now confirmed that two tornadoes touched down in Saginaw County.

Albee Township: An EF1 tornado, roughly 0.5 miles wide, traveled 4–5 miles and caused significant damage to several structures.

Bridgeport Township: A smaller EF0 tornado touched down and damaged one structure.

We’re grateful to the NWS for the timely alerts that gave residents the chance to take shelter.

A huge thank‑you goes out to our first responders who worked through most of the night handling storm-related calls. While it’s always a team effort with mutual aid partners, the Albee Township Fire Department did a great job gaining access to structures, some with significant damage, to ensure residents were safe.

Our community understands that our firefighters are work horses, not show horses. But every once in a while, they get the opportunity to look pretty.

Several of YOUR FFs recently attended the funeral of a fellow firefighter who passed away. They showed up with personal pride and professionalism, wearing their Class A uniforms.

So for a few minutes, they pretended to be show horses. They ensured to be home by midnight, before the carriage turned back into a pumpkin.

I would say that they clean up pretty nice.

Last evening while many of you were watching NCIS, All Elite Wrestling or Law and Order, your Tri-Township firefighters were tied up with training.

The class objectives included small equipment operations, and a basic rope and knot refresher.

Why?

Because it’s what you expect. It’s what our community has earned!

We thank you, for allowing us to serve you.

Updated detour information.

Please do not attempt to go around the barricades. They are there for your safety.

In the event of an emergency response, our mutual aid partners have been notified of the detour. We have staged fire apparatus on the south side of town at Thurston’s Outdoors. As always, this community is grateful for the Thurston Family’s continued support.

Your Tri-Twp FD has a standard operating procedure for this type of event. The last time that we activated this staging procedure, was back in 2020, when the dams broke in Midland County.

The southern bridge of the Bad River, next to Thurston’s Outdoors, has been closed by MDOT until further notice!

Throughout Saginaw County, the James Township FFs and your Tri-Township FFs are known as workhorses, not show horses. And today was no different.

Around noon today, James Township FFs were paged out to a large brushfire on the Shiawassee Flats Refuge. They immediately struck a 2nd alarm for assistance from your Tri-Twp FD.

The muddy/rugged terrain and a slight wind created some challenges, to contain and extinguish the moving fire. But have no fear. Your Tri-Twp and James FFs came up with an out of the box solution.

Today they deployed, flat bottom boats designed for the flats, along with portable float pumps. This allowed the wild fire attack teams to engage from the water, instead of the land. In addition, it eliminated the requirement to keep refilling brush trucks with water.

Solid work by both agencies, working hand-in-hand. No egos here. Just common sense solutions, to an uncommon problem.

A special thanks goes out to Dan Boivin at Duck-Rite Fabricators, who custom designed and built our boats, specifically for the refuge.
