Early this morning at approximately 1:15 A.M., in the blistering cold, your St. Bernard Fire Department was dispatched to the 400 block of Lombardy Street in Elmwood Place for a residential structure fire. Crews found the building to be fully involved on arrival and were forced to fight the blaze from a defensive position. The firefighters on scene not only fought the fire, but also frozen hydrants, rapidly freezing hose lines, and slip & fall hazards due to the amount of ice being created from the water used to extinquish the flames. No firefighters were injured and investigations teams reported no injuries or fatalities inside the structure. Many thanks to all of the mutual aid companies that put in the work and provided support on the scene.

September 11, 2025 — 24 Years Later

Today, we pause to honor and remember the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, including the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice answering the call.

For firefighters across the nation, 9/11 is more than a date in history. It is a reminder of courage, unity, and the selfless dedication of those who put others before themselves. Their bravery continues to inspire the fire service every single day.

As we mark the 24th anniversary, we stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the fire service, with the families who still carry the weight of that day, and with all who vow to never forget.

We will always remember. We will always honor.

Today marks the end of an era as Captain Kerry Meyer is retiring from St. Bernard Fire Department. Kerry joined St. Bernard FD in 1990 (before some of our firefighters were even born) and served 35 dedicated years. He was always a pleasure to have on your crew and a great leader. He will be missed as he enters his retirement and joins unit 4. From all of us here at the Nard, we wish you the best, Kerry. Enjoy Florida and the sweet life you earned.
