🙌 Access granted (with improvements)

St. Johns County has reopened the Fort Matanzas vehicular beach access ramp after completing its improvement project, which added ADA accessibility upgrades to the parking lot and entrance area that were not part of the original scope of work.

Gopher Tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) are land animals, not sea turtles. They aren't great swimmers. However, tortoises occasionally enter shallow ocean water! While scientists aren't entirely sure, the tortoises may be trying to cool off or remove ticks and other parasites.

If you spot one along the shoreline, admire it from a distance! Never handle or move it, as gopher tortoises are protected. It is illegal to harass or relocate them in Florida.
