Greek carpenter Juan Genopoly purchased this property and used it as a Minorcan homestead before turning his living space into a schoolhouse in the late 18th century! It became one of the first schools in the United States to educate boys and girls together.
The schoolmaster taught English reading, writing, and arithmetic, charging weekly tuition between 12.5 and 25 cents. The second floor served as living quarters for the schoolmaster and his family, along with the detached kitchen still on site.

🗝️Celebrating 461 Years in St. Augustine on September 8, 2026. The city was founded on September 8, 1565 by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles for Spain.

From history.com:

Even before Jamestown or the Plymouth Colony, the oldest permanent European settlement in what is now the United States was founded in September 1565 by a Spanish soldier named Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in St. Augustine, Florida. Menéndez picked the colony’s name because he spotted land from his ship on August 28, the feast day of Saint Augustine of Hippo.
