Emergency Action Plan - Extreme Heat Protocol

Dear valued Members, Commissioners, Athletic Directors, and Coaches,

Please be advised that in conjunction with the SJCSD’s emergency action plan, and the FHSAA “Zachary Martin Act” we are instituting SJMSAA’s emergency action plan for “Extreme heat”.

For those teams that have a “Wet bulb” and have been cleared by SJMSAA staff to use, may follow the “Wet bulb” protocol as established by the FHSAA Zachary Martin Act. (See below for reference). All other teams and activities must follow the Heat Index guide as established below. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Currently, from 8/10/2023 through 8/13/2023 SJMSAA has proactively canceled all outdoor activities. The forecasted average heat index is above 100 degrees from 10am until after 10pm during those days. On 8/13/2023 SJMSAA Staff will re-evaluate the upcoming week and we will notify our members by email, and social media outlets of our plans.

We hope you will take this time off to focus on the STUDENT part of being a student athlete. This time off should give each student athlete time to focus on academics and kicking off the new year with a solid effort. We recognize how stressful and irritating this need to cancel outdoor activities can be, but we believe it is in the best interest of student athlete safety that we make this difficult decision.

What is Heat Index?

The heat index (“real feel/feels like”) will guide decisions. How hot it feels to the body when the air temperature (in Fahrenheit) and relative humidity are combined. Also known as “real feel” or “feels like.”

Heat Index Guide:

Designed to help protect students from incurring heat-related illnesses or problems, SJMSAA personnel will reference the Heat Index Guide to modify and/or suspend outdoor activities. This applies to all SJMSAA outdoor sports and activities.

· heat index is less than 95 degrees – Normal outdoor activities
· heat index is 95 to 98 degrees – Outdoor activities should be limited or may be cancelled
· heat index is 99 degrees or above - Outdoor activities will be cancelled.
