Take a step back in time 👣 Aviles Street is the oldest street in the United States—confirmed by archaeologists who uncovered pottery shards dating back to the early 1600s beneath its layered brick paving. In the 1930s, Aviles became the city’s first formal arts district when the old Hamblin Hardware warehouse at 11 Aviles Street was transformed into a studio and gallery space. Today, this brick-paved street remains lined with art, history, and more!

On the corner of Hypolita and St. George Street, you’ll find the Hispanic Garden 🌺🌴🌹 In 1965, Elizabeth Towers, the only female member of the St. Augustine Historical Restoration and Preservation Commission at the time, spearheaded a project to develop this corner lot. She formed the all-female Hispanic Garden Committee to bring the Spanish-style garden to life.

The "plazoleta" is modeled after Spanish gardens, which took cues from Roman patios. Flowers fill the ceramic vases, and the beds around the perimeter contain marigolds, palm trees, jasmine, cabbage palms, holly, and kumquats. To learn more about the Hispanic Garden, visit our website!

The city of St. Augustine is named for Saint Augustine of Hippo, a patron of the early church. But have you ever wondered how the city came to be named for him, and why? 🤔 Augustine (pronounced ah-GUS-tin) was born and lived much of his life in Hippo, a seaport city in North Africa, part of present-day Algeria. He served as a church priest, a bishop, and a theologian and was canonized in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII.

Watch history come alive before your eyes as the Historic Florida Militia presents a timeline saunter on one Saturday evening in select months this spring!

During the saunter, you can learn how European settlers and conquerors lived in St. Augustine and watch as this knowledgeable and appropriately garbed group walks through historic downtown. The reenactors saunter from the City Gate to the Plaza de la Constitución, and then down Aviles Street, the oldest street in the continental United States. The participants will pose for photos along their route and answer questions about the people who lived in St. Augustine in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.

The next event is scheduled for April 18th 📆 To learn more about this monthly event, visit our website!
