Habitat : Habitat homeowners are 56% less likely to face foreclosure compared with non-Habitat owners.

For the past 50 years, Habitat for Humanity has built pathways to affordable homeownership and has seen its homeowners flourish. Habitat for Humanity International and 43 local affiliates across the country teamed with Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, to study many aspects of homeownership. The study, Paths to Stability and Wealth, found that the Habitat homeownership model does help households build more than a home.

What if we told you that just one coffee, one sweet treat, one energy drink a week could help build a home?! 🏡

Become a Hope Builder this summer by skipping one coffee or treat a week and turning that into a monthly $7 gift to Habitat St. Johns. And challenge your family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors to join you for a summer of giving! Because one Hope Builder makes a difference, but 10 Hope Builders are a movement.

Hope and homes aren’t built alone. Join us in providing safe, stable housing for our wonderful community. Learn more at habitatstjohns.com

The St. Johns County Economic Development Department is launching a new young professionals initiative as part of the County’s workforce development efforts under the Strategic Plan goal of Economic Prosperity. Paint brushes, smiles, and helping your community - what could be better?! 🏡

Habitat for Humanity of St. Johns County is looking for volunteers to come help put the finishing touches on the last six homes in the Volusia Woods neighborhood. Most of the work is indoors (aka in the air conditioning), and involves painting and caulking. Volunteer hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 8am to 12 pm, to beat the afternoon heat. Volunteers must be 16 years or older. Groups are welcome, so bring your friends for some great bonding with a purpose!

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce for hosting A Place to Call Home: The Status of Attainable Housing in St. Johns County.

Malinda, our Executive Director, joined Katelynn Quarrels, an attainable housing advocate and Habitat St. Johns homeowner, and Bill Lazar, Executive Director of the St. Johns Housing Partnership, for a discussion about housing affordability and its impact on workforce housing and quality of life.

We’re thrilled to share our passion for affordable housing. Thank you to everyone who attended!

Let’s bust some Habitat myths that we hear all the time!

MYTH: Habitat gives away houses for free.
TRUTH: We hear this one all the time, and just plain no. Habitat homeowners pay a mortgage, just like any other homeowner. What Habitat does is offer homeownership opportunities to individuals and families who do not qualify for conventional mortgages.

MYTH: Habitat doesn’t offer workforce housing.
TRUTH: Habitat offers housing opportunities to all who qualify, no matter your job. Teachers, police officers, firefighters, restaurant workers, you name it! Single homeowners can earn up to $91,320 a year, while a family of four can earn up to $130,440, and still qualify.

MYTH: Habitat homes are not good quality.
TRUTH: Our homes are professionally designed, built to meet or exceed local building codes, and must pass rigorous municipal inspections before a family can move in. And while volunteers help in constructing our homes, they are closely supervised by professionally trained staff. Technical work, like roofing, electrical, HVAC, and more, is performed by trained and licensed professionals.

MYTH: Habitat isn’t for me.
TRUTH: More people qualify for a Habitat home than you might think. The affordable housing crisis affects a wide range of income levels, and many career workers and young professionals need a hand up to secure permanent housing – that’s what we’re here for!

We're so proud of Julie, our Community Engagement Manager, and her service to St. Johns County!

Disaster recovery starts long before a storm makes landfall.

Recently, Gina Birmingham, our Long-Term Disaster Recovery Coordinator, joined VOAD Executive Board members Dr. Brian Schoonover, Patty Isola, and Julie Wesling at the St. Johns County Emergency Management Operations Center for a hurricane response exercise.

The scenario involved a Category 1 hurricane just off our coast, with the EOC at Level 2 activation. Representatives from every Emergency Support Function (ESF) worked through real-world situations, tested communication systems, and strengthened partnerships that help our community respond and recover when disasters strike.

As ESF-15, our role is to coordinate volunteer organizations, donated resources, and community support during disasters. Exercises like this remind us that preparation, communication, and collaboration are some of our strongest tools.

Thank you to St. Johns County Emergency Management for helping keep our community ready before the next storm arrives.
