In the last week St. Albans emergency services have responded to two vehicle v. e-scooter/bikes. The result was serious injury to the operators of the e-scooters. Neither operator was wearing helmets or any other protective equipment. Operating electric bikes and scooters demands high alertness because these devices can travel at high speeds, are heavier than standard bicycles, and mix unpredictably with both car and pedestrian traffic.

Essential Safety Practices

1. Wear a helmet every time you ride, as head injuries and concussions are common in falls.

2. Follow traffic laws by riding in the same direction as traffic and obeying all stop signs and signals.

3. Stay off phones and keep both hands on the handlebars instead of wearing earbuds or texting.

4. Use lights and reflectors to make yourself visible if you ride near dusk or at night.

5. Keep off sidewalks unless local laws specifically permit devices there.

6.Never ride impaired by alcohol or drugs, which drastically reduces reaction time and balance.
