Meet Your Saginaw FD Firefighters: Engineer Bryan Waugh! 🚒

Bryan has been with the Saginaw Fire Department for 6 years, after spending 10 years with the Dallas Fire Department and 5 years with the Benbrook Fire Department.

As an Apparatus Operator, Bryan’s primary responsibilities include “driving the apparatus to the scene and operating the apparatus at fire related calls.”

So, what inspired Bryan to become a firefighter?
“I was inspired to become a firefighter when I reconnected with a childhood friend after college, who was a firefighter. I was never interested in having a ‘desk job’, had a desire to serve the community in some way and was interested in the medical field so being a firefighter was the perfect fit.”

Bryan says becoming a paramedic was even more challenging than becoming a firefighter. “The firefighter academy was physically challenging, but paramedic school was much more work and studying. Our medical skills get used far more often on calls than our firefighting skills.”

His favorite part of the job? “The camaraderie with the people I work with and being part of a team.”

When they aren’t responding to calls, there’s still plenty to do around the station. Bryan says they “workout, do fire and EMS training, as well as, maintaining the station and apparatus.”

Outside of work, Bryan enjoys “anything outdoors,” including hiking, mountain biking and kayaking.

And his fire safety message for our community is simple and important:
“Keep your bedroom door closed when you are sleeping. A closed door can stop fire spreading to your bedroom.”

Stay cool, Saginaw!

[8/25 6:30 AM] An Extreme Heat Warning and Heat Advisory continues today (Tuesday) with an elevated fire threat in place for much of the region. High temperatures up to 109 are expected, with afternoon humidity dropping to 15-25% and south winds of 10-15 mph. AVOID any activities that could start a wildfire!

Hot and breezy conditions are expected today, featuring south to southwest winds near 15 mph and high temperatures approaching record levels. Consequently, there will be an elevated risk for grass fires. Please stay hydrated and avoid activities that may spark a wildfire.

🚒 A Special Station Visit! Our firefighters had some very special visitors stop by the station, and they came with four paws, wagging tails, and plenty of personality.

These adoptable pups from City of Saginaw Animal Services were happy to meet the crew and are now hoping to meet their future families, too. Adoptions are FREE Aug. 24–31 for National Clear the Shelters month!

These pups are ready to go from station visitors to forever family members. Consider this your sign to answer the call! 🐾

Meet Your Saginaw FD Firefighters: Firefighter/Paramedic Windham! 🚒

Firefighter/Paramedic Windham has been with the Saginaw Fire Department for about two and a half years, after previously working for the Krum Fire Department for just over five years.

Windham says as a firefighter, "we’re more of the hands-on part of the team. On calls, we’re responsible for things like fire suppression, search and rescue, patient care, and whatever else the situation requires. Around the station, we train, maintain equipment, and make sure everything is ready to go. Our officers are responsible for leading the crew and making decisions on scene, and our apparatus operators are responsible for getting us there safely and operating the trucks and pumps."

When asked what inspired him to become a firefighter, Windham shared "I knew I wanted to do something in public safety. When I started looking into firefighting, I fell in love with pretty much everything about the job right away."

In regards to whether becoming a firefighter or paramedic was harder, Windham said becoming a paramedic was “a whole different level” because of the amount of information required and the ability to apply it appropriately.

Windham enjoys that the job provides a good mix of firefighting and medical calls. One of the most rewarding parts is being able to help someone “when they’re having one of the worst days of their life.” He also enjoys the camaraderie, adrenaline, problem-solving, and never knowing what each shift will bring.

Outside of calls, Windham says firefighters train, maintain their trucks and equipment, clean the station, work out, conduct inspections, and handle other department duties. Outside of work, Windham spends most of his time with his family, while also working part-time jobs and staying busy with projects.

Windham’s safety message to the public: “Take your feet off the dashboard when you’re riding in a car. Your teeth will thank you.”

Stay cool, Saginaw!

Unseasonably hot temperatures are expected to continue, with heat indices consistently in the 103-109 range. With minimal precipitation upcoming, this hot, dry pattern will continue and may result in increased grass fire activity through at least the first half of the week.

Update 8/13/26 6:25 PM: The gas leak has been secured and no longer leaking. The lanes of Saginaw Main are now fully restored.

The shoulder at Worthy Street remains closed while the utility company completes repairs. Please continue to use caution when traveling through the area and watch for crews working nearby.

TRAFFIC ALERT: GAS LEAK

A gas leak has been reported in the 200 block of North Saginaw Boulevard, resulting in heavy traffic and temporary road closures.

Saginaw Main Street is reduced to one lane in each direction. The Southbound side is affected, and the intersection of Worthy Street and Saginaw Main is closed. No traffic is permitted onto Worthy Street from Saginaw Main.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and use alternate routes if possible. Please slow down and use caution around emergency crews.
