On Wednesday, Dec. 23, we held our annual Christmas party, and while it looked a little different than years past, it was QUITE a celebration. Dozens of volunteers turned out to help us distribute 983 hot meals of ham, mac and cheese, green beans, sweet potatoes, dinner rolls and Christmas cookies plus fresh produce from Hidden Harvest PLUS gifts. Guests also received sack lunches for Christmas Eve - a record-breaking 1,966 meals provided in a single day.

We've been collecting photos all month long and will continue to add to this album as the photos come in. Thank you to all who have made it possible for us to provide nourishing meals to our guests, even as the numbers have continued to mount. We truly have a generous and caring community!

With the help of our awesome volunteers and staff, we served 742 turkey dinners today. Guests received two to-go containers - one with homemade pie, cranberry sauce, a roll and a drink and another with roast turkey, Kim's cornbread stuffing, REAL mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans.

Preparations for our traditional Thanksgiving feast at the East Side Soup Kitchen usually begin several weeks ahead. This year was no different in that respect but WAY different in the number of meals and serving outdoors rather than in our dining room. We are so grateful to our generous community for making it possible to serve this special meal to our hungry neighbors.

Employees from Future Insurance Agency, Inc. volunteered yesterday. We are so grateful for their service, cheerfully serving our guests!

The staff, volunteers and board members received fire safe training from Lieutenant Rick Brady of the City of Saginaw Fire Department Station #4. He shared a lot of valuable information to keep staff, volunteers and guests safe. We even learned how to handle a car fire in our parking lot.

We hope we won't ever need to utilize the skills we gained today.

Rick is a regular volunteer at the East Side Soup Kitchen. Thank you, Rick, for your continued commitment to the ESSK!

GOD BLESS ED COATES for his generosity and continued support in assuring we have plenty of TURKEYS to feed our guests a traditional Thanksgiving feast! Thanks to the Shaws for delivering the turkeys!

Board members, staff, volunteers and a special friend from Hidden Harvest completed CPR, First Aid, Heimlich and AED training yesterday at the soup kitchen. We want to be prepared to help our guests if an emergency situation arises!

The training was provided by SVSU Nursing instructor Jennifer Weaver and her students. They volunteer on a regular basis. Thank you, SVSU Nursing students!
