FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Round Island Lighthouse to Receive High-Visibility Color Upgrade

— April 1, 2026 — The Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society is proud to announce that, in partnership with the United States Lighthouse Commission on Visibility, and with grant support from the Great Lakes Safety Division and regional maritime partners, official approval has been granted to implement a new high-visibility color scheme for the historic Round Island Lighthouse.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance navigational safety across the Great Lakes region. The updated color palette—featuring high-visibility yellow, orange, and green—has been carefully selected to improve contrast and visibility during adverse weather conditions, including fog, heavy precipitation, and low-light environments.

“While the lighthouse has long served as a historic landmark, this project allows it to continue its original mission—guiding vessels safely—using modern visibility standards,” said a spokesperson for the Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society. “We are excited to blend preservation with innovation in a way that supports both heritage and safety.”

The project has undergone extensive review and approval through multiple agencies focused on maritime safety and historicalish preservation. The Great Lakes Safety Division identified the lighthouse as a key candidate for enhanced visibility due to its strategic location and ongoing recreational boating traffic in the area.

In addition to improving safety for commercial vessels, the upgraded lighthouse will serve as a more prominent visual aid for recreational boaters navigating the surrounding waters.

The Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society extends its gratitude to all partners, supporters, and community members who have helped make this project possible, and would like to wish everyone a happy April fools.

The USCG has given a notice that the ice between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island will be broken up in the next 72 hours. They are warning that no ice (especially in the Straits) is safe and to stay off of it.... and no, there is no blue ice. Enjoy the Day!

Having some fun colorizing our historical collection. Just adds a new perspective.

59 years ago today, November 29, 1966, the SS Daniel J. Morrell broke up in a strong storm, taking 28 of her 29 crewmen to their deaths. The 60 year old 603' ship was called the Queen of the Lakes when she was built in 1906, because she was then the longest ship on the Great Lakes.
