The Safford Police Department’s School Resource Officer, Sherri Hill, partnered today with Kathy Grimes from the Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition to host a Youth Alcohol Training and Discussion at Safford High School.

This important conversation focused on the real dangers of underage drinking, especially the risks of drinking and driving, and how the choices students make today can have lasting impacts on their future. Students were encouraged to ask questions and share their thoughts, creating an open and meaningful dialogue.

To wrap up, students were divided into teams for a debate on drinking age, promoting critical thinking, teamwork, and respectful discussion.

We value every opportunity to engage with our youth and help them make safe, informed decisions.

Behind every call for service, every report, and every interaction with our community, there is a dedicated Administrative Team working hard behind the scenes.

They are the backbone of our department, managing property and evidence, maintaining records, supporting training, coordinating grants, and often serving as the first point of contact for our citizens with professionalism and care.

Today, we also recognize all Administrative Professionals across the Gila Valley who help make our community such a great place to live and work.

We are truly grateful for their hard work and dedication. Please join us in thanking them for all they do!

Safford Police Department was proud to take part in this special event on Friday. What has become an annual tradition is more than just a run, it’s a meaningful show of support for Special Olympics athletes and everything they represent: courage, inclusion, and an incredible spirit.

We’re grateful to have joined law enforcement partners and participants along the route, and to see the community showing their support along the way.

Thank you to all of the agencies who participated and helped represent our community while carrying the Flame of Hope forward.

❤️ Safford Community Benefit BBQ – Thank You ❤️

Our hearts are full after this incredible event. The Safford community showed up in such a powerful way to support Liam Fritz and Jenessa Rodriguez, and we are truly honored to have been a part of it.

Thanks to your generosity, the BBQ was a huge success, and with the addition of a generous grant match from Nathaniel’s Childhood Cancer Foundation, we were able to make an even greater impact for these families during such a difficult time.

This is what community looks like — people coming together, showing up, and lifting one another up when it matters most. From every plate purchased to every share, donation, and helping hand behind the scenes, we are beyond grateful. ❤️

We also want to extend a huge thank you to our incredible community sponsors for their generous donations, helping ensure our local families are supported: Napa/Macks Auto, Vista Recycling, Ice King, Kemptons Chevrolet, Sun Pumps, Thriftee, Pepsi, and Vinings.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped setup, coordinate, cook and serve the delicious food. A special thank you to Officer Sherri Hill, Sgt Randy Loya and Sgt Jason Larson for their extra dedication to this event.

Please continue to keep Liam and Jenessa, along with their families, in your thoughts and prayers.

The City of Safford thrives because of the exceptional individuals who contribute their talents and dedication every day. Through our Employee Spotlight series, we highlight team members who exemplify commitment and help make our City successful.

In this edition, we’re proud to spotlight Randy Loya, Patrol Sergeant in our Police Department. Randy supports and coaches patrol personnel and monitors officer performance to ensure professionalism, safety, and policy compliance. He also represents the Department through community policing efforts, including public meetings and community events. Randy is passionate about serving the community, values strong connections, and works alongside a skilled team.

Discover how Randy reflects our values below:

What initially attracted you to the City of Safford, and what motivates you to continue working here?
I was initially drawn to Safford because of the strong sense of community and the opportunity to make a real impact. It’s the kind of place where you’re not just doing a job, you’re building relationships and serving people you truly get to know. What keeps me here is that same connection. The support from the community, along with the people I work with, makes it meaningful to come to work every day.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is the team I work with. They are an incredibly skilled and dedicated group of professionals. It’s inspiring to see the work they do every day. It’s rare to be part of such a close-knit team where you truly trust the people beside you with your safety and your life.

What’s the most interesting thing you’re working on right now?
Developing and working with the Special Response Team has been the most interesting and fulfilling part of my work recently. It’s rewarding to help build something that enhances our department’s capabilities and provides a higher level of service and safety to the community.

How do you approach challenges in your role, and what strategies do you use to overcome them?
Communication is key, making sure everyone is on the same page and working toward a common goal. I also believe in preparation and continuous training, so when challenges come up, we’re ready to respond effectively and safely. At the end of the day, it’s about adaptability, teamwork, and making sound decisions.

Thank you, Randy, your commitment to excellence helps keep our community strong!
