Storm Prep Reminder: Sandbags & Proper Use 🌧️

As we continue preparing during this storm season, it's important to talk about the uses and limitations of sandbags.

Sandbags can help redirect small amounts of stormwater away from doors and structures—but they must be used correctly to be effective. As shown in the graphic:

✔️ Use plastic or a tarp as a barrier.
✔️ Stack sandbags securely (this usually requires more than the 10 bags the City supplies during Sandbag Distribution Events).
✔️ Seal edges with tape to reduce gaps.

⚠️ Keep in mind:

• Sandbags will NOT fully seal out water and are not effective against storm surge.
• They are best for small water flow only and short-term use.
• Sandbags typically last about one year, so keep those bags the entire season.
• When staff set-up for sandbag distribution, it limits their ability to complete pre-storm preparations, both within the City and at their own homes.

🗑️ After the Storm – Proper Disposal Matters

• Sandbags exposed to floodwater may be contaminated—handle with gloves and property owners must dispose at the Pinellas County Solid Waste Landfill.
• Clean sand (not contaminated) can be reused in your yard or garden.
• Do NOT place sand in trash containers or at the curb.
• Only empty bags can go in your household trash.

⚠️ Garbage Preparation Reminders

Did you know that placing construction debris, rocks, sand, soil, concrete, or other heavy materials in your garbage can is prohibited and can cause serious problems during collection?

Hidden heavy debris can:
• Damage City sanitation trucks and collection equipment, leading to downed equipment and costly repairs
• Cause garbage to spill into streets and neighborhoods
• Break or crack garbage cans
• Create safety hazards for sanitation crews

Please keep heavy materials out of your household garbage can. These items require special disposal methods and should not be placed in automated collection containers.

Before placing your can at the curb, make sure:
• The lid closes completely
• Materials inside the can are household trash only, no lithium ion batteries or chemicals
• Construction debris, soil, rocks, sand, and concrete are removed

Working together helps keep our collection routes safe, efficient, and clean for everyone.

🚗 Parking Tips: Park Smart. Park Safe.

Help keep Safety Harbor safe, accessible, and welcoming for everyone by following these important parking guidelines:

✅ Do not park within intersections or block driveways
✅ Stay at least 15 feet away from fire hydrants
✅ Do not park on crosswalks or within 20 feet of them
✅ Keep 30 feet clear from stop signs, yield signs, and traffic signals
✅ Avoid blocking mailboxes or sidewalks
✅ Park within 12 inches of the curb

These simple steps improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, emergency responders, and neighbors.

🚫 Fertilizer Ban in Effect

A reminder that Pinellas County’s seasonal fertilizer ban is now in place to help protect our waterways during the rainy season.

From June 1 – September 30, fertilizer application is prohibited. Heavy rains can wash nutrients into storm drains, ponds, and other waterways, contributing to harmful algae blooms and water pollution.

Here’s how you can help:

✅ City staff will review and take action

🌊 Phase 3 Water Shortage Restrictions Are Still in Effect 🌊

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) has declared Phase 3 Water Shortage Restrictions from April 3, 2026, through July 1, 2026 due to ongoing drought conditions across the region.

The City's most recent comparison of water use during restrictions shows an increase of over 1 million gallons of water per month.

✅ What You Need to Know:

- Applies to all of Pinellas County.

💧 Why It Matters:

Outdoor watering accounts for over 50% of household water use. Conserving now helps protect our aquifers, rivers, and lakes throughout the dry season.

👉 What You Can Do:

- Check your irrigation system for leaks and broken sprinkler heads.
- Ensure your irrigation timer and rain sensor are working properly.
- Follow the local, City watering schedule.
- Delay new sod and landscaping installations. If replanting, choose Florida Friendly landscaping and drought tolerant plants.
- Fix indoor leaks, especially dripping faucets and toilets.
