🐿️ FOX SQUIRREL FUN FACTS! 🐿️

🐿️ One of the largest tree squirrels in North America.

⚖️ Can weigh around 2 pounds or more, making them noticeably bigger than many other squirrels.

🎨 Their colors vary a LOT! Fox squirrels can be gray, brown, rusty orange, reddish, or even nearly black depending on the region.

🌳 They are little forest planters! Fox squirrels bury acorns and other nuts for later—and the ones they forget can sprout into new trees.

🦷 Their front teeth never stop growing. Constant chewing and gnawing naturally keeps them worn down.

🪂 That giant fluffy tail has several jobs. It helps with balance, communication, warmth, and maneuvering while jumping through trees.

🏃 They're powerful jumpers and climbers. Their strong hind legs help them leap surprisingly long distances.

❄️ Fox squirrels don't hibernate. They may stay tucked away during severe weather, but they'll come back out to forage when conditions improve.

👶 Babies are born tiny, pink, hairless and blind. They are completely dependent on their mother for their first weeks of life.

🏡 Mom may keep more than one nest. If she feels her babies are in danger, she can carry them individually to another location.

🌰 They have impressive memories. Fox squirrels use spatial memory and environmental clues to relocate many of their buried food caches.

🌎 They're an important part of the ecosystem. By moving and burying seeds and nuts, squirrels contribute to forest regeneration and provide an important link in the food web.

❤️ So the next time you see a fox squirrel carrying off an acorn, remember—there's a lot more going on than a squirrel stealing snacks!

🦌💔 Bucky Update 💔🦌

This is an update we really hoped we wouldn't have to make.

After everything Bucky has been through trying to save his injured front leg, the integrity of the bone just wasn't there, and his leg had to be amputated.

We tried. Bucky tried. And sometimes, despite doing everything possible, the outcome isn't what we hoped for. 💔

But Bucky is still here, and he's still fighting. ❤️

Now our focus is on keeping him comfortable, helping him heal, and seeing how well he adapts to life on three legs. We don't know exactly what his future will look like yet, but we'll give him every reasonable opportunity to show us what he can do.

One day at a time, sweet boy. 🦌❤️

You guys remember Bucky? He is the one that had surgery from being hit by a tractor. Well he had the pin removed a few days ago and a cast made to fit for 2 weeks. I noticed him not walking right and checked and he has either broken it again or dislocated it. He is back at the vet now. I'll keep you all posted when I find out more information but in the mean time keep him in your thoughts.

🦫 Why We Don't Relocate Groundhogs

We often get asked why we return healthy groundhogs to the exact place they came from instead of releasing them somewhere "better."

The answer is simple: their home is where their survival depends on.

Groundhogs spend countless hours digging and maintaining elaborate burrow systems. Those dens aren't just holes in the ground—they're their safe place to sleep, raise their young, escape predators, and most importantly, hibernate through the winter.

Relocating a groundhog miles away, especially by car, can be a death sentence. They don't know the new territory, may be chased away by other groundhogs, struggle to find food and shelter, and often don't have enough time or energy to dig a suitable den before hibernation.

Today we transported a groundhog about an hour by car—but only so we could return it to the exact area where it belongs. Going home gives it the best chance to survive and eventually return to the den it already knows.

The best wildlife rescue isn't always moving an animal somewhere else. Sometimes it's simply making sure it gets safely back home. ❤️
