Today is National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIWR).
According to the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, native women are disproportionately targeted by crimes involving abduction and murder, with murder rates up to 10x the national average. Their disappearances are tied to crimes ranging from domestic violence, stalking, to sexual assault, trafficking, and more.
What is the significance of MMIWR?
-Honoring the lives of our missing and murdered relatives.
- Shedding light on the countless tragedies impacting Native women and communities.
- Highlighting the need for ongoing grassroots advocacy and organizing for change of laws, policies, protocols, and allocation of increased resources at the Tribal, federal, and state levels to end these injustices.
-Sharing information needed to understand and drive legal reforms and change.
