During Black History Month, we honor Army Staff Sergeant Edward A. Carter Jr., whose extraordinary heroism in WWII went unrecognized for decades. After single-handedly taking out enemy positions and capturing prisoners despite severe wounds, Carter was denied the Medal of Honor due to racism. In 1997, 52 years later, his valor was finally acknowledged, securing his place among America’s greatest heroes.

The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was the only all-Black, all-female unit deployed overseas during World War II. Tasked with clearing a massive backlog of mail for U.S. troops, the “Six Triple Eight” worked tirelessly under the motto “No Mail, Low Morale,” ensuring soldiers stayed connected to loved ones. Their service broke barriers and exemplified courage and dedication.

CalVet's Minority and Underrepresented Veterans Division is partnering with TODEC Legal Center to offer a Veterans Pathway to Citizenship webinar on Thursday, March 11, at 10 a.m.

The webinar will provide free legal assistance to veterans seeking naturalization services. Additionally, veterans will have the opportunity to learn about their earned state and federal benefits. All veterans and families are welcome!
