DPR is taking the next step to reduce health and environmental risks from fipronil, an insecticide used in many spot-on and spray flea & tick products for dogs and cats.
We’ve released two new documents for public input: a draft memo that explains risks along with possible options for reducing those risks, and an economic report that looks at alternative products available to pet owners in California.

Learn more and share your comments by November 16.

Paraquat-dichloride is being phased out of California. As of last week, all manufacturers of pesticide products containing paraquat have voluntarily canceled their product registrations in California.
DPR initiated a reevaluation of paraquat in late 2024 and companies voluntarily canceled paraquat pesticide products starting in April of this year until August 6.
DPR-licensed dealers may continue to possess and sell pesticides that were voluntarily canceled for up to two years following the cancellation.

It’s full steam ahead for a pilot study on steam injections as an alternative to fumigation in berry fields.

DPR is funding a $175,000 pilot research project from the Santa Cruz County Agricultural Commission, which will explore if steam could be used instead of pre-plant soil fumigation.

High temperature steam can reduce certain soil-borne pests, plant diseases, nematodes and w**d seeds. While it’s not a direct substitute for fumigation, it could potentially help reduce fumigant use in sensitive areas, such as near schools.

“This pilot represents an important collaboration to meet the needs of communities and growers in California,” said DPR Director Karen Morrison. “DPR is pleased to support efforts that encourage local partnerships, drive innovations in alternatives, and advance sustainable pest management.”
