The Sacramento Area Sewer District (SacSewer) provides local sewage collection services to more than one million people in the Sacramento region, including the unincorporated Sacramento County; the cities of Citru

Hot Sacramento summers = prime pest season. 🪳☀️
When temperatures rise, pests like cockroaches search for water and shelter—often in dark, damp places. If you see any in or around manholes, call us at (916) 875-6730.

Here's what you can do if you see cockroaches in or around your property:
🥪 Eliminate potential food, water, and shelter sources
🏠 Seal cracks and crevices around your home
🐕 Pick up pet food between feedings
🗑️ Remove trash daily from home and keep lids closed on outdoor cans

Tiny microorganisms are doing some BIG work. 🦠💪

In this episode of What the Flush?!, SacSewer Associate Civil Engineer Geo Thomas takes us behind the scenes at SacSewer's EchoWater Resource Recovery Facility to explain how we clean millions of gallons of sewage each day before it's safely returned to the Sacramento River.

One of the most important steps? Biological Nutrient Removal, or BNR for short! 🦠

Using naturally occurring microorganisms, BNR helps remove nutrients, such as ammonia, from sewage, protecting public health and the environment.

▶️ Watch to learn how science, engineering, and biology work together to protect public health and the environment.

Taking the top spot in Live Action is… “Royal Flush” by Rocky Rankin and Jude Xiong from Pleasant Grove High School! 👏♠️🏆

Flushing wipes is always a gamble, and this PSA plays it perfectly. With a clever, card-themed twist, Rocky and Jude show how even “flushable” wipes don’t break down like toilet paper, leading to clogs and costly sewer issues.

The winning move? Trash the wipes, not the pipes. 🗑️

Congratulations to these students and everyone who participated in SacSewer’s annual PSA Contest, where creativity meets real-world impact to help protect public health, the environment, and our sewer system.

Happy ! 🌎💧🌿

At SacSewer, protecting the environment is part of our work every single day.

From responsibly collecting and treating sewage to recovering resources like recycled water, and restoring habitats in the Bufferlands and protecting local waterways, our teams work year-round to support a cleaner, healthier Sacramento region.

Environmental stewardship isn’t just one project or one day—it’s part of how we serve more than 1.6 million people across our community. ♻️

Collaboration in action! 💧🚧

SacSewer was proud to host the California Alliance for Sewer System Excellence (CASSE) Annual General Meeting, bringing together agencies committed to protecting public health, safeguarding the environment, and advancing best practices across the industry.

From drone technology and source control strategies to regulatory updates and sewer system monitoring, attendees shared knowledge and learned from one another to help strengthen the services our communities rely on every day.

A big thank you to our presenters and staff for helping make the meeting a success! 👏

And the winner is… “Keep Wipes Out of Pipes” by Tobi Howell of Franklin High School! 👏🏆

Think “flushable” means good to go? Think again. With clever animation and a lot of personality, Tobi brings the drama to your drains—showing how wipes can clog pipes, wreak havoc on infrastructure, and cost us all in the long run. His verdict? Straight to the trash. 🚫🚽

Give it a watch, you might never look at a wipe the same way.

Congratulations to Tobi and all the students who entered SacSewer’s annual PSA Contest, where creativity meets real-world impact to help protect public health, the environment, and our sewer system.

What the Flush?! 🚽🤯

You wouldn't believe some of the things our crews have found inside sewer pipes over the years.

In this video, SacSewer Collection System Maintenance and Operations Assistant John Burleson shares a few of the wildest discoveries our crews have encountered while keeping the sewer system flowing for our community.

While some of these finds may seem surprising (or even funny), items that don't belong in the sewer system can contribute to blockages, equipment damage, and costly maintenance.

Watch to see some of the most unexpected things found underground—and remember, only flush human waste and toilet paper.
