Sacramento area public agencies, including the County of Sacramento and the Cities of Sacramento, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Folsom, Galt, and Rancho Cordova, have joined together to form the Sacramento Stormwater Quality Partnership (SSQP). The Sacramento Stormwater Quality Partnership is a multi-jurisdicational program encouraging the community understand and protect local waterways from the impacts of urban run-off, which flows untreated from storm drains to creeks, streams and rivers.

Looking for a summer morning walk?

Effie Yeaw Nature Center sits inside the American River Parkway in Carmichael, within a 100-acre riparian preserve right along the river. The trails are open daily from dawn to dusk. The nature center building is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9AM to 5PM. No admission fee, donations welcome. County parking is $7 per vehicle.

It hasn't rained in Sacramento in months. So why does what goes down the storm drain matter right now? Anything entering a storm drain flows directly to local creeks and rivers, rain or shine, with no treatment. In summer, that means irrigation overspray, cleaning products and much more. Only rain belongs in the drain.

Cigarette butts are the most-littered item on Earth. An estimated 4.5 trillion dropped each year. The filters are plastic, not cotton. They don't biodegrade, they break into microplastics. One butt on a Sacramento curb washes into a storm drain and reaches the American River with the next irrigation cycle or rain.

June is one of the best months to spot western pond turtles basking on logs along Arcade Creek and the American River. They are native to California, increasingly rare, and easy to miss because most people assume they are the invasive red-eared sliders that have taken over much of the region. If you see one, you are looking at an animal that has been in these watersheds for thousands of years.

Look closely at the steep sandy banks of the Sacramento River this month. Dozens of golf-ball-sized holes line the face of the bank, and if you watch long enough, you will see bank swallows shooting in and out. June is peak nesting season for this state-threatened bird, and the Sacramento River is the heart of their California range.

Once the heat hits and people start watering regularly, pesticide runoff in Sacramento peaks. Anything applied to your yard before you water, or before it rains, washes straight into storm drains and flows untreated to our local creeks and rivers. Worth knowing before you reach for the spray bottle.
