WECA is a nonprofit organization serving merit shop electrical contractors, their employees and the industry suppliers that support them. In California, WECA offers federal and state-approved Commercial, Residential, and Low Voltage (Voice Data Video and Fire Life Safety) Electrical Apprenticeship programs, a state-approved Electrician Trainee program, certification exam preparation classes, and state-approved continuing education classes for journeyperson electricians and low voltage technicians. In Arizona, WECA offers a federal and state-approved Commercial Electrical Apprenticeship program and continuing education classes for journeyperson electricians. WECA additionally shares its expertise by producing curriculum products and publications for the industry.
WECA is seeking a San Diego Government Relations Representative (SGRR) who will develop, improve, and manage positive relationships with two unique populations (Government and Community Entities and Merit Shop Electrical Contractors) within selected region(s) in California.
Under the supervision and guidance of the Government Relations Director the SGRR will proactively interact and build positive relationships with government entities, which are elected officials and other civic leaders to influentially explain how WECA supports workforce development, industry training, and apprenticeship programs. The SGRR will support the Government Relations Director in local advocacy, relationships and knowledge crucial to elections and the merit shop philosophy to share with the Government Relations Committee (GRC). In addition, as directed, the SGRR will represent WECA members on policy and industry issues before county and city agencies, advocating on behalf of the construction industry.
In collaboration with the Government Relations Director, the SGRR will interact and build professional relationships that improve WECA member engagement and retention. In addition, while working collaboratively with the WECA Operations staff, conduct focused regional activities, and attend events as needed.
Essential Characteristics:
● Demonstrate ability to form lasting relationships.
● Previous campaign experience or government relations employment a PLUS.
● Prior experience with a contractor membership organization in the construction industry a PLUS.
● Ability to (1) develop persuasive approaches and pitches that exhibit value in government affairs to association members, and (2) to influence local government and community leaders to support the merit shop industry.
● Professional demeanor with public speaking
● Comfortable presenting to groups, large and small
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills; effective, diplomatic, and friendly communication style
● Strategic thinker and ability to create strategic and tactical action plans.
● Strong interpersonal skills to cultivate positive relations with diverse groups.
● Capable of working autonomously and effectively in a remote environment (self-direction is a must and expected)
● Ability to distill complex concepts into easily understood ideas.
● Ability to travel mostly in-region, periodically throughout the state.
● A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.
