California Library Literacy Services

California Library Literacy Services California Library Literacy Services (CLLS) is a program of the California State Library.

Local libraries help adults learn to read using trained volunteer tutors. California has approximately 3.4 million adults with below basic literacy skills. More than 100 California public libraries serve over 20,000 adult learners annually in over 800 library branches and other outlets statewide. More than 12,000 trained volunteers work one-on-one with adult learners helping them to achieve their

literacy goals. As a result, these adults are voting for the first time, reading newspapers, reading aloud to their children, and securing jobs.

Text of the Proclamation by State Librarian Greg Lucas relative to National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week

Whereas, Lifelong literacy is a basic right for all individuals in our society and is essential to the welfare of the nation and the State of California; and
Whereas, California public libraries provide Californians of all ages and backgrounds with a trusted, stigma-free environment in which to achieve their literacy goals; and
Whereas, Family literacy programs are proven to be an effective intervention strategy in breaking the cycle of illiteracy for both children and adults; and
Whereas, Literacy programs in California’s public libraries change the lives of nearly 16,000 Californians every year by helping adult learners and their families learn to read and write; and
Whereas, Since 1984, more than a quarter of a million learners and their families in California have benefited from library-based literacy services; and
Whereas, The National Coalition for Literacy has designated the week of September 20-26, 2020 as National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, the goal of which is to heighten public awareness, strengthen alliances, leverage resources, and increase the number of people who understand the vital role adult education and family literacy plays in our nation’s well-being.
Now, Therefore be it Resolved, That all Californians and California libraries are encouraged to join the California State Library in observing NATIONAL ADULT EDUCATION AND FAMILY LITERACY WEEK from September 20-26, 2020.

Dated this 20th day of September, 2020.
