The mission of Breaking Barriers Community Services Center is to coordinate a community response to assist in the early diagnosis and prevention of and provide care for people living with catastrophic illnesses Since 1995. At the time many people in the community were unable to seek treatment for HIV due to an inability to get to the doctors. Breaking Barriers was formed to help people who were in
that situation get the help they needed through the support of the community. Consequently, Breaking Barriers as a program started to find other areas in which those affected by HIV were in desperate need and yet there was no agency that was able to help. Programs were started for things like emotional support and household help. Breaking Barriers essentially began to fill in all the places in peoples lives that doctors and hospitals couldn't help with. Eventually, as the program developed and became stronger at getting people to where they needed to be, dealing with preventing HIV became something that was a large priority in the community and hence for us. The Breaking Barriers Prevention Program works with those most at risk for HIV and those who are already living with the virus to stop the transmission to people who don't have it and help those who do live healthy lives. In 2000 Breaking Barriers split off from the Church and became its own organization. Around that same time there was a large need beginning within the communities of Breast Cancer for the same sorts of services we provided to HIV and the Breaking Barriers Breast Cancer Assistance Program was born. Breaking Barriers provides transportation to medical appointments and help with household chores and treatment navigation. This is all done through the generous help of volunteers through giving of their time, energy or financial resources. Breaking Barriers is a non profit organization in the Sacramento area, that helps individuals affected by disease with things that hospitals and other non profits can't or won't. We fill in the gaps to get people healthy and keep them that way.
