Come and meet Artist, Curator, and Activist and Artist Ambassador Shonna McDaniels. As a practicing artist, mentor, and Executive Director of the Sojourner Truth African American Heritage Museum, the influence of Shonna McDaniels is felt throughout the Sacramento Art Community. Shonna will talk about her work and her thoughts on the importance of connecting with nature.

The Birds and Benches project in North Natomas has partnered with the Natomas Charter Performing and Fine Arts Academy as one of our Community Care Holder groups. Matthew Flores has been working with the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians for several months now. He has held workshops with the Tribe and together they have built a relationship around this theme of Birds and Benches in Natomas. Come hear how Matthew’s project is progressing, and the lessons he is learning along the way.

Join us for a guided Birding Field Trip. Artist Ambassador Michele McCormick will share Photography Tips and Sacramento Audubon Field Trip Leader Ben Graber will guide the group through the avian habitats and roosting grounds. Novice and expert birders alike are invited to join this local birding expedition.

Artist Ambassador Ene Osteraas-Constable will present her ongoing work with the Wilton Rancheria. They are inviting the community to accompany them on a journey of curiosity and inspiration as they explore the Birds and Benches theme as it relates to Ene's art and the values and traditions of the Rancheria.

Ene is passionate about creating art that fosters interrelationships between people, place and nature, nurturing environmental stewardship and conservation. She has created ecologically oriented artworks nationwide, working with an array of public parks, wilderness areas, botanical gardens, and green spaces. We invite you to join us for the opening of Liquid Memories: An Ode to the Waters of Sacramento, curated by Lorena Rodriguez, the 2026 Emerging Curator Fellow!

The exhibition brings together the work of seven Sacramento artists who participated in a collective process composed of two in-person activations and a series of reading and audiovisual materials, all centered on pouring our attention toward the waters through a situated aesthetic.

Join the Wilton Rancheria, Birds and Benches Care Holder partner for a presentation, ” From the Sky to the Earth: Wilton Rancheria's Cultural Connection with Birds” from the Tribe's Traditional Ecologic Knowledge team. Our bird relatives are more than just pretty feathers and beautiful songs. They are deeply rooted in the origin stories and traditions of the Miwok and Nisenan people of Wilton Rancheria. Join the Office of Arts and Culture for an Open House at 808 O Street, Sacramento, on Friday, May 1, from 3–6 p.m.

Formerly the Capital Athletic Club, this site now houses the Capital YMCA on the 8th Street side and a creative activation hub accessible from O Street. Currently home to Musiclandria, the building includes additional spaces that may be suitable for artists or organizations seeking areas for rehearsal, instruction, artmaking, or performance.

Community members are invited to tour the facility, explore available creative spaces, and share their specific workspace needs as we gather input to help shape future policies and priorities related to creative workspace in Sacramento. Light refreshments will be served. While all artists and cultural organizations are welcome, please note that 808 O Street is particularly well suited for performing and media arts and is not currently equipped for gallery or exhibition uses.
