A free summer youth public speaking and leadership program!

OCA Sacramento is now accepting applications for our annual summer youth Speak & Lead Program, a 6-week public speaking, communication and leadership program created for high school students in the greater Sacramento region to learn how to organize speeches, build public speaking confidence, and develop communication and leadership skills through an interactive class with educational lectures, stimulating exercises, fun activities, and unique guest speakers.

Join us this summer starting June 25th for 6 3-hour sessions to gain a transferable skill and make life-long friends.

OCA Sacramento is now accepting applications for their Speak & Lead Program. Participants will learn how to create a speech outline, organize your speech ideas, communicate verbally and non-verbally, and prepare your note cards among other communication skills.

The Speak & Lead program is for Asian Pacific Islander high school students (graduating seniors are ok) located in the greater Sacramento region. It's a 6-week public speaking program meeting every Sunday from 9AM-12PM starting July 10th and ending August 14th where the final speech competition will take place for a chance to win some cash! The classes will be held at the Sacramento Sheriff Community Room located at 7000 65th Street, Sacramento, CA 95823. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

If interested, the online application is due by Friday, June 24, 2016 for consideration. The program is limited to 20 students so apply early and have all questions completed thoroughly. Enjoyed celebrating the Dragon Boat festival with OCA Sacramento Chapter - Asian Pacific American Advocates and friends last night. The festival is a time to reflect on the importance of loyalty and commitment to the community. I'm thankful to everyone who came and to all of those who help strengthen our community each day.

Sacramento's Hmong and Mien parents and students gets engaged in local control funding formula

Sacramento, Feb. 25-- Over 30 Hmong and Mien parents and students were engaged in conversations about Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) during last night's HMLCAN Community Forum at George Sim Community Center.

HMLCAN partnered with Hmong Innovating Politics (HIP), Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC), Hmong Women's Heritage Association (HWHA) and Iu-Mien Community Services (IMCS) to create a conversation geared towards the Hmong and Mien community.

Along with HIP's presentation on LCFF, Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) Interim Superintendent Sara Noguchi, Ed.D and Administrator Tu Moua discussed the progress of LCFF within the school district.

Students and former SCUSD students spoke about their molded 12-year old textbooks, unsavory mystery lunches, drastically cut after school programs and the need to re-implement higher education navigators/counselors.

Parents and students broke into groups to discuss and identify key concerns from their school site that they wanted to see more of or changed. Culturally sensitive administrators and teachers and curriculum that reflect the ethnic diversity of the student population were the concerns urged by parents. Individualized support from teachers and tutors, simple school facilities upgrade including desks and computers, and certified instructors who were equipped with skills to work with students were among the top three concerns for the students.

HMLCAN and HIP will compile the responses and send them to SCUSD to be reviewed and considered in the school districts Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) draft to be released mid March.

A final LCAP is due on July 1st to be implemented throughout the school district.

Thanks to all the community organizations including Scc Hope and Asian Resources Inc. (ARI) and Hmong and Mien parents and students who participated in last night's community forum. You're feedback will be reviewed by the Sacramento City Unified School District.

A big thank you to our community partners: Hmong Innovating Politics (HIP), Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC), Hmong Women's Heritage Association (HWHA), Iu-Mien Community Services (IMCS) for helping to outreach, plan the group discussions and present on Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF).
