As many get ready to go back to school. We wanted to make you aware of educational outreach opportunities in hydrology.

The National Weather Service (NWS) WaterAware program is a hydrology outreach initiative invested in teaching others about the water cycle, river basics, flooding and flood safety, the science behind NWS river and flood forecasts, drought and much more!

We are reaching out to offer students (K-12) an opportunity to learn about these important topics from our hydrology experts! Please see the attached WaterAware flier for more information. We also have an interactive Hydro Hotseat for students ages 12+, which allows the student to experience being a river forecaster!

Wet weather at times this week! A low moves through Srn CA with showers and isolated t-storms into tonight. A cold system moves through region Wed/Thu bringing more widespread precip and cool temperatures (up to 20 degrees below normal on Thursday). Additional chance of precip, mainly over the north Friday into the weekend. River levels will rise with a few points possibly reaching action stage.

Periods of precipitation for most of CA and NV are expected early to mid March as several systems move through the region. The first system will move in tonight into Monday and the next one mid-week. Freezing levels drop to around 3500-5500 ft by Sunday evening. Minor rises on rivers are expected across some coast and lower elevation basins. Additional systems are expected to bring more precipitation into mid March.

Showers and slight chance of thunderstorms mainly over Central & Srn CA and most of NV into Monday as a cold low slowly moves through the area. 1-3" forecast over transverse range to San Diego Cty Mtns & 0.75-1.5" over Srn CA coast. Freezing levels drop to 3-5 kft Sunday and Monday. Lingering showers over Srn CA Tuesday-Wednesday. Precipitation possible in the North late Thursday into Friday as a a frontal system moves into the region.

A weaker system bringing periods of light to moderate precip to Srn OR and Nrn CA and portions of Central CA and NV into early Tuesday. Generally dry later Tuesday into early Friday except showers possible in NW CA and Srn OR Cascades Wednesday. How much precipitation fell over CA/NV in the last 48 hrs ending at 4 am today? Highest precipitation amounts were 3-6" with local amounts to around 8 inches along the Northern CA coast & Shasta Basin. Rivers rose to monitor stage at several points & a few points to Minor flood stage.

Wet Week ahead, especially for Nrn CA! Widespread moderate to locally heavy precipitation over Nrn CA tonight into Friday. The precip will bring sharp rises on rivers, especially in Nrn CA & flow expected on the Colusa and Tisdale weirs. Some locations forecast to rise to minor to moderate flood stage. Have you looked at the CNRFC web page, cnrfc.noaa.gov lately? The flood threshold terminology and corresponding colors on the front map and individual plot thresholds have been updated to align with the National Weather Service Standards across the country. Monitor stage is now called action stage (yellow) and flood stage is now broken into 3 levels of Minor (orange), Moderate (red), and Major (purple) Flood stages.
