A seat belt can be the difference between walking away from a crash and never making it home.

From May 18–31, the California Highway Patrol will participate in the national Click It or Ticket campaign with increased seat belt enforcement. Officers will be stopping drivers and passengers who are not properly buckled up.

Too many lives are lost each year because someone chose not to wear a seat belt. In a crash, being ejected from a vehicle is often deadly, and airbags alone are not enough to protect you.

Buckle up correctly every trip:
✔️ Shoulder belt across your chest
✔️ Lap belt low across your hips
❌ Never behind your back or under your arm

REMINDER—PLEASE READ AND SHARE❗

The California Highway Patrol is warning people about fake text messages claiming they owe money for unpaid tickets.

Several people have reported receiving suspicious texts from unknown numbers. These messages claim the recipient has unpaid tickets, use “final notice” language, and include a payment link to avoid repercussions.

The texts are fake and part of a phishing scam. Do not click links or share any personal or financial information with unknown callers or texters. CHP does not solicit payments via text message.

Anyone who receives a call or text from someone claiming to be from CHP and requesting money should report it to local law enforcement immediately.

The California Highway Patrol joins the Tulare County Sheriff's Office in mourning the loss of Deputy Randy Hoppert.

A United States Navy veteran, Deputy Hoppert chose a life of service and continued that commitment in law enforcement, carrying forward a family legacy. He served the people of Tulare County with dedication and purpose, and he will be missed by those who knew him and worked alongside him.

All of us at the CHP are keeping his family, his partners, and his department in our thoughts.

Protecting our communities and local businesses. This investigation took a large-scale retail theft ring off the streets and recovered thousands in stolen property.

In January 2026, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Valley Division Organized Retail Crime Task Force (ORCTF), received information from The Home Depot regarding an organized retail theft ring operating in the region. The investigation revealed multiple individuals were committing thefts and supplying stolen merchandise to the same group of suspects, who were orchestrating a large-scale operation.

Through a comprehensive investigation, ORCTF investigators identified several individuals involved in this criminal enterprise.

On March 19, 2026, investigators served a residential search warrant in Stockton. As a result, approximately $157,415.68 in suspected stolen retail merchandise was recovered and returned to victim retailers. Additionally, approximately $62,800 in cash was seized.

The CHP remains committed to combating organized retail crime and holding those involved accountable.

We extend our thanks to The Home Depot for their continued partnership and collaboration.

Feeling tired behind the wheel isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s dangerous. Driving while drowsy can slow reaction times, impact decision-making, and increase the risk of serious crashes.

According to , sleepiness can result in crashes at any time of the day or night, but three factors are most commonly associated with drowsy-driving crashes:

• Occur most frequently between midnight and 6 a.m., or in the late afternoon. At both times of the day, people experience dips in their circadian rhythm—the human body’s internal clock that regulates sleep.
• Often involve only a single driver (and no passengers) running off the road at a high rate of speed with no evidence of braking.
• Frequently occur on rural roads and highways.

If you feel drowsy while driving, pull over at a safe location and rest. Stay safe, California. 🩵

As the weather warms up and you take your motorcycle out for spring, it’s time to refresh more than just your ride; it’s time to reset your safety habits, too.

After months off the road, take a few extra minutes to inspect your bike: check your tires, brakes, lights, and fluid levels, and make sure your gear still fits properly and hasn’t worn down over time. A quick pre-ride check can make all the difference.

Drivers aren’t always expecting motorcycles, especially early in the season. Stay visible, ride defensively, and assume you haven’t been seen. Increase your following distance and be extra cautious at intersections.

And for drivers...motorcycles are back. Take a second look before changing lanes or turning. Sharing the road saves lives.

Start the season smart. Ride safe and enjoy the road ahead. 🏍️

CHP offices are closed today, March 31, 2026, for Farmworkers Day.

While state offices may be closed, our officers and dispatchers remain on duty statewide, providing patrol, emergency response, and essential public safety services.

Longer days and spring break crowds mean more activity on our roadways. Take it easy, stay alert, and watch for pedestrians and cyclists. 🚶‍♀️

If you're out with friends or on vacation and plan on drinking, please designate a sober driver. Enjoy spring break responsibly.
